At the top are two vertical pencil sketches in loose, grey, searching lines; below are three versions in much more strongly contrasted black ink. The motif repeats throughout: an infantryman in profile, leaning to the right, rests both hands and his chin on a long rifle planted in the ground, as if it were a walking stick. He carries an enormous, bulging backpack with canteens and tied bundles, a long greatcoat, puttees and boots. His stooped posture conveys weight, sleepiness and exhaustion. In the upper sketches the lines overlap as the artist works out the position of the legs and arms, barely suggesting a crowd and explosions in the background. Below, the ink forms dense black masses in the coat and backpack, reserving white for the face, hands, sky and dust. In the centre the figure bends even further, his face almost hidden. In the side versions smoke, bursts of fire, distant rooftops and tiny soldiers can be made out. Handwritten signatures and inscriptions appear beneath some scenes, on cream paper yellowed slightly with age.","contexto":"According to the source, this 1914 drawing is by French artist Auguste Louis Lepère (1849–1918) and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, credited to the Delia E. Holden Fund. The title refers to the retreat after Charleroi, in present-day Belgium, where French forces withdrew following fighting in August 1914, at the very start of the First World War. The source lists pencil as the medium, although the mount also clearly includes black ink versions. It is not known whether Lepère witnessed the retreat himself; he probably worked from reports or visual accounts of the moment.","como_mirarla":"Follow the same soldier from the upper sketches to the inked versions below and notice how the pose becomes heavier and more closed in. Then look at the rifle: it is not being fired, it is being used as a crutch. That small functional shift turns a combat scene into an image of endurance after defeat.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual observation: the two finished ink drawings at lower left and lower right are almost identical, but comparing their small handwritten marks and slight variations in the background helps reveal the process of revision between one version and the next.","preguntas":["What changes in the meaning of the scene when the weapon stops being used to fight and becomes a support for standing?","Why might an artist repeat exactly the same exhausted figure five times instead of showing a large battle?","Does the repetition make the soldier seem like a specific individual or a symbol of thousands of men?"]},"es":{"titulo":"La retirada después de Charleroi... In the upper sketches the gray pencil suggests a hazy dawn, with explosions and a crowd barely hinted in the background.
