Central Tibet, c. 1440–1470","se_ve":"A devotional thangka painting on cotton, nearly square and vertical, with worn, uneven edges. At the center, rendered on a much larger scale, a monk sits in lotus position on an elaborately decorated throne. He wears a deep red and ochre robe with intricate gold hemming and a tall, pointed golden hat that drapes over his ears. His face is pale and tranquil, eyes half-closed, with a faint smile; his hands are joined at the chest in the gesture of teaching. A double halo in red and gold frames his head. Near his ears, two tiny emblems float on lotuses — a sword and a book — delicate and partly obscured by darkening. Surrounding him are dozens of smaller figures in registers: across the top, a row of haloed lineage masters; along the sides, monks and wrathful multi-armed deities in blue, gold and red, some captured mid-debate with outstretched arms. Below, fierce guardians, two pale spotted felines facing inward, and a bottom frieze of kneeling monks. The palette is dominated by vermilion red, burnished gold ochre and sooty black, with accents of pale blue and white. The surface is matte and finely cracked, with losses of pigment and a soft metallic sheen where gold remains, lit evenly without strong shadows.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this work depicts Tsong Khapa (1357–1419), founder of the Geluk order to which the Dalai Lamas belong. It was made in Central Tibet around 1440–1470 in gum tempera and gold on cotton, only decades after his death. He wears the pointed golden hat of Geluk monks and the emblems of Manjushri — sword and book — as tradition regards him as an emanation of the bodhisattva of wisdom. The facial features retain a sense of portraiture, less standardized than in later works from the mid-1600s onward when Geluk monks held power in the Tibetan theocracy. Surrounded by lineage masters in lively debate, the image evokes his synthesis of doctrine in the Lam Rim, the foundational text on the stages of the path to enlightenment.","como_mirarla":"Start with the calm face and joined hands at the center, then look to the small sword and book floating near his ears. Follow outward to the surrounding masters and their animated gestures of debate. Notice finally the worn edges and the glint of gold, which reveal the painting's age and material richness.","dato_curioso":"Made with gum tempera and real gold on cotton, this thangka still shows the metallic glow of its gilding after nearly six centuries, a hallmark of early Geluk paintings from Central Tibet.","preguntas":["How does your reading of the central figure shift when you notice how many surrounding figures look toward him or engage in debate?","What do you feel in the contrast between his stillness and the energetic, sometimes wrathful figures around him?","How does the lavish use of gold and deep red shape the sense of spiritual authority?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Tsong Khapa, fundador de la orden Geluk. I focus on the material of this 15th century thangka: distemper and gold on cotton, with craquelure and pigment loss that speak of devotional use.
