At the top there is a pale, coarse band of undyed cloth, followed by a tapestry border with a meandering vine, leaves and small blocks in pink, green, dark blue and beige. The middle is dominated by a deep wine-red field. Within it, tan, green and ochre shapes form highly stylized figures that are hard to separate at first glance: a partial face in profile at upper left, raised limbs, curved forms suggesting bows, a central oval motif and lines that mirror each other. At lower left there is a striking black patch with small reddish figures. Toward the lower right a tan horse, the edge of a saddle and a rider's leg can be made out above a striped, four-legged animal with an open mouth. At the bottom, decorative bands with vines and geometric rectangles reappear. The weave looks matte, fibrous and slightly rough, with flat areas of color and visible wear.","contexto":"According to the source, this unknown-author textile comes from Egypt in the Islamic Abbasid period, dated to the late 8th to 9th century. It was made with plain weave and tapestry weave, using undyed linen and dyed wool. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that it depicts the Byzantine theme of the hunt, with archers on horseback facing each other because the design was based on costlier Byzantine silks with mirror-image symmetry.
