Each roundel has a deep saturated red ground with woven figures outlined in dark thread, filled with ochre, mustard yellow, muted green and pale blue. Upper left, a haloed reclining female figure is attended by a nude youth holding a vessel, while a small winged putto hovers above; a yellow colonnade appears behind. Upper right, two men grapple over a diagonal spear, one nearly nude with a cloak, the other helmeted in a short tunic. Lower left, a spear-bearing youth strides forward as a veiled woman holding a child watches from under a portico. Lower right, a bearded elder with a balance scale confronts a standing nude female, with another floating putto above. The surface is coarse and grainy, characteristic of wool and linen tapestry weave, with visible wear, loose threads and small losses. Even lighting emphasizes the contrast between the vivid red and the black void, and the scale suggests palm-sized patches once sewn onto a garment.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this work is Four Segmenta from a Tunic, by an unknown maker, dated 650 to 750, from Egypt during the Umayyad period (661–750). The medium is tapestry weave in wool and linen, classified as Textile in the Textiles department. Such circular inserts, sewn onto tunics, were a long-standing tradition in Late Antique and early Byzantine Egypt that continued into the early Islamic era. The figural scenes with mythological or everyday characters, putti and combat motifs are typical of so-called Coptic textiles. The exact archaeological findspot and original wearer are not recorded, but the four pieces probably belonged to a single elite garment.","como_mirarla":"Start with the overall grid of four red circles, then read each vignette on its own. Notice the tattered golden borders that unify them despite their fragmentary state. Look for the small hovering putti at the top of two roundels, a clue to the persistence of classical imagery in the Umayyad period.","dato_curioso":"In 7th- and 8th-century Egypt, tunics were commonly embellished with woven medallions called segmenta or orbiculi that were often cut out and reused for centuries, so fragments now displayed apart originally decorated one piece of clothing.","preguntas":["What stories do you think each roundel tells, and how might they work together as decoration for one tunic?","How does knowing that classical-style imagery continued under early Islamic rule change how you read these textiles?","What does the fraying and fading tell you about the life of these fabrics before they became museum objects?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cuatro segmentos de una túnica, Egipto, periodo omeya, 650–750","se_ve":"Sobre un fondo negro se presentan cuatro medallones circulares de textil, irregularmente recortados y con los bordes deshilachados y amarillentos, dispuestos en dos filas de dos. I focus on the material side: four circular tapestry medallions in wool and linen, irregularly cut and originally sewn onto a tunic. Each medallion is a tiny narrative world: at the top a scene with a halo and a winged putto that seems to float, below a scale evoking justice like Libra.
