It fills almost the entire frame, and its torn edges, with loose threads especially at the top, reveal its age and fragility. In the upper part, against a cream linen ground, rise two large black forms, vertical and jagged at the edges, like dark columns or stylized trees; on the right, a third form is cut off by the break. A black horizontal band and then a narrow strip with small black, white and red marks separate that zone from the one below. Below, against a worn, intense red, a human figure appears frontally, with a white face, large eyes outlined in black, strong brows, a straight nose and a small red mouth. The figure wears a golden crown or headdress with rectangles and a green and red finial. Its reddish tunic is covered with light and dark dots; its white hands, with long, separate fingers, hold on the right a pale shape resembling a bird or a scepter. On the left is a tall, stepped dark-green form. The surface is rough, grainy and flat, characteristic of weaving, with faded areas, holes and loss of threads.","contexto":"According to the source data, this is a fragment of an ornament by an unknown maker, dated to the 700s-800s and probably attributed to Egypt in the Abbasid period, between the 8th and 9th centuries; the record itself marks that attribution with a question mark, so it is not certain. It is made in plain or tabby weave with inwoven tapestry ornament, in linen and wool, and belongs to the Textiles category at the Cleveland Museum of Art, which acquired it through the J. H. Wade Fund. We do not know who wove it, what garment or object it served, or who the figure represents; it probably formed part of a larger decoration that is now lost.","como_mirarla":"Start with the frontal face in the lower half, then move up to the dark vertical forms: the layout reads like a small architecture framing a character. Note the contrast between the pale upper area and the intense red below. The frayed edges and the cut-off forms on the right change the reading: we are seeing only part of a larger scene.","dato_curioso":"In tapestry weaving, the colored weft threads do not run across the entire width: they are woven only where each color is needed, which makes it possible to “draw” figures with thread, but also leaves a more fragile surface at the boundaries between colors.","preguntas":["Who might this crowned figure be, and what clues does the clothing offer without allowing a certain identification?","What could the complete textile have looked like, and what was on the parts that are now missing?","How does knowing that an image was made with thread, rather than paint, change the way we look at it?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Fragmento de un ornamento","se_ve":"La pieza es un fragmento textil vertical, irregular y deshilachado, montado sobre un fondo liso verde oliva que lo hace resaltar. I focus on how fragile this vertical, irregular fragment is, with broken edges and loose threads especially at the top. At the top there are two big black spiky shapes like castles or monsters and another one cut off.
