The body is oval and swelling, with a gently lobed and undulated wall that suggests draped fabric. The rim is high, wavy and scalloped, with a finely crimped, irregular edge that catches the light and forms a luminous silhouette. The glaze is glossy white, with minor chips and wear along the rim that hint at age. On the exterior, two sculpted handles project from the sides: elaborate green rocaille scrollwork with curling volutes, each topped by a ridged shell painted in a deep magenta-pink. Four short cabriole feet, touched with the same green, lift the vessel and give it a sense of lightness. The surface is decorated with delicate hand-painted floral sprigs: thin stems, elongated green leaves and tiny yellow and pink blossoms scattered naturally across the white ground. The interior is smooth and empty, in a very pale pinkish white that reflects the soft studio lighting. Light comes from above and the left, highlighting the sheen of the enamel, the shadows under the belly and the slightly raised texture of the painted relief.","contexto":"This object is a faience tureen dated to about 1760–1770 and attributed to Marseilles, France, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it belongs to the Norweb Collection. Its maker is unknown, which is common for French faience of the 18th century. Faience is tin-glazed earthenware widely used as an affordable alternative to porcelain for fine tableware in France. The bulbous form, rocaille feet and handles, and polychrome floral decoration are typical of the Rococo style. It is shown without a lid, which was probably lost over time, so its original appearance is not known.","como_mirarla":"First follow the wavy, scalloped rim and the way light moves across the white glaze. Then focus on the sculptural handles where the bright green scrolls meet the pink shell. Finally notice the small painted wildflowers and the tiny chips on the edge that tell of age and handling.","dato_curioso":"In the 18th century Marseilles was one of France's leading faience centers, renowned for inventive Rococo tureens with asymmetrical, naturalistic shapes inspired by shells, plants and animals.","preguntas":["How does the contrast between the plain white glaze and the vivid green and pink details affect your impression?","How would imagining it with its lid and in use on an 18th-century dining table change its meaning?","What do the small imperfections and wear reveal about its life as a functional object?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Sopera sin tapa, Marsella, hacia 1760–1770","se_ve":"En primer plano, sobre un fondo degradado de gris oscuro a claro, reposa una sopera de loza sin su tapa. I focus on the white glaze, that shine that still catches the light despite the fine craquelure and tiny chips along the rim.
