At the center, Christ, shown in profile with long curly hair and a short beard, embraces his mother, who wears a veil and seems to faint in his arms. He wears a wide robe with long folds falling to the ground; she raises a small, fragile hand toward his chest. A crowd presses around them: on the left, a woman in a round headdress clasps her hands in prayer and another covers her face; on the right, bearded men talk and hold one another up. Below, at right, a kneeling woman raises both arms toward Christ in a pleading gesture, her light dress spreading across the floor like an unfolded cloth. In the foreground, near the bare or barely covered feet, a small shaggy dog sleeps or sniffs the ground, oblivious to the drama. Behind the figures rises Renaissance architecture with a rounded arch decorated with circles, columns, and, above, the tablets of the law flanked by figures and small angels. To the sides are balconies and a distant landscape of mountains and trees. At lower left appear the initials “D·H”.","contexto":"According to the source data, this work is titled Christ Taking Leave of His Mother, by Daniel Hopfer (Germany, c. 1470–1536), and belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, credited to the John L. Severance Fund. It is dated very broadly, c. 1485–1536, so the exact year it was made is not known. It is a German etching, a printmaking technique in which Hopfer is considered a pioneer, with roots in the decoration of armor. The subject — Christ saying goodbye to his mother before the Passion — comes from late medieval devotion and is not narrated in this detail in the canonical Gospels. It was probably intended for private contemplation and to move the viewer to compassion.","como_mirarla":"Start with the central embrace, where the faces almost touch, then move outward to the hands: praying, covering a face, reaching up, holding someone back. Notice how the crowd presses in while the little dog at the bottom stays apart. That contrast makes the farewell feel both public and deeply intimate.","dato_curioso":"In the lower left corner you can read the initials “D·H”, the artist's signature worked into the scene itself, while at the bottom center a small shaggy dog seems to sleep or sniff the ground, indifferent to the sorrow around it.","preguntas":["What does this farewell gain by being shown amid a crowd rather than in private?","How do the many raised, joined, or reaching hands change the feeling of the scene?","Why might the artist have placed a sleeping dog at the feet of such a sorrowful group?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Ficha bilingüe / Bilingual record — Cristo se despide de su madre, Daniel Hopfer","se_ve":"Grabado en tinta negra sobre papel crema amarillento, de formato vertical y trazo fino, denso y vibrante. I focus on the etching line, that fine black ink on creamy yellowish paper.
