The jar has a slightly flared, thick-rimmed circular mouth and a short, stout neck. Its surface records the potter’s wheel in uneven horizontal throwing ridges encircling the whole body, with a coarse, granular stoneware texture typical of high-fired clay. Coloration shifts from warm reddish-orange where the clay is bare to mottled dark brown and smoky gray where natural ash glaze has melted during firing. Soft, even lighting creates gentle highlights on vitrified patches and subtle shadows that emphasize the relief. Near the shoulder runs a delicate incised comb pattern, a continuous wavy line that wraps around the vessel. Lower on the body, bold, deeply incised angular marks in a loose V shape stand out against the rough surface, likely a potter’s mark. The base is narrow, unglazed and irregular, with a pitted, earthy feel and small kiln scars. Without handles or lid, the piece conveys utilitarian strength and quiet, fire-born beauty.","contexto":"This is a Bizen ware storage jar, or tsubo, by an unknown maker, dated to the late 1400s to early 1500s, in Japan’s Muromachi period (1392–1573). According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, it is made of stoneware with natural ash glaze, an incised comb pattern and an incised potter’s mark. Bizen is one of Japan’s oldest continuous kiln traditions, known for firing without applied glaze and allowing wood ash and flame to create surface effects. The specific maker and original use context are not documented, but such jars were probably used to store grain, seeds or liquids.","como_mirarla":"First follow the jar’s silhouette from rim to foot to appreciate its solid, utilitarian volume. Then compare the bright orange-red clay with the smoky ash-coated areas. Finally focus on the two kinds of incision: the rhythmic combed wave on the shoulder and the bold scored marks below, where human gesture meets kiln accident.","dato_curioso":"Bizen ware uses no added glaze: its coloration and sheen come solely from pine-wood ash that melts onto the surface during many days of continuous firing in tunnel kilns.","preguntas":["How does knowing the color comes from fire and ash, not paint, change how you see the jar?","What does the contrast between the fine combed wave and the rough angular scoring tell you about craftsmanship and chance?","What everyday history do you imagine for a utilitarian object that has survived for over five hundred years?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Jarra de almacenaje: cerámica Bizen, periodo Muromachi (finales del siglo XV - principios del XVI)","se_ve":"La imagen muestra una jarra cerámica robusta y de silueta ovoidal, fotografiada de frente sobre fondo gris neutro degradado de oscuro a claro. If you look closely you will see what the fire wrote.
