The body is made of silver with gilded fields, completely covered in dense high relief. The rim is thickened with a beaded band and a scrollwork frieze beneath it. The remaining surface is a continuous tapestry of curling vines, large blossoms and fantastic creatures in silver against a warm golden ground. Near the mouth a winged being with a human-like face, perhaps a garuda or harpy, spreads detailed feathers among foliage; lower down a crouching lion and a sinuous curling dragon are entwined with scrolling tendrils. Light picks out the contrast between polished silver and matte gold and reveals wear, tiny dents and dark patina settled in the recesses. The terminal head is bovine in character, with a short muzzle, small ears and truncated horns; between its parted lips protrudes a small cylindrical spout, with traces of gilding still visible on the muzzle and neck.","contexto":"According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a rhyton, a horn-shaped drinking vessel ending in an animal head, dated to about the late 600s to early 700s and attributed to Central Asia (Sogdiana) or Tibet, made in silver with gilded foil. The horn form and use of silver point to cultural exchange with Persia, while the lush decoration with lions and a curling dragon shows awareness of Chinese designs. Wine was poured into the large opening at the top and flowed out through the small tube held between the animal's lips, a flow the drinker could stop with a thumb. The maker and exact workshop are not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the overall curve from wide mouth to animal head, then trace the relief from top to bottom. Notice how the gilded background makes the silver foliage stand out and look for the winged figure near the rim. Finally focus on the tiny spout between the animal's lips and picture the act of drinking.","dato_curioso":"Rhyta like this worked as a controlled drinking vessel: liquid poured in at the top exited only through the narrow tube at the tip, requiring the drinker to regulate the flow with a thumb.","preguntas":["What does the blend of Persian and Chinese motifs suggest about cultural exchange along Central Asian routes at that time?","How does imagining the vessel in use, with wine flowing through it, change how you see it as a museum object?","What does the contrast between bright silver, warm gilding and dark aged patina convey to you?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Ritón con cabeza de animal, Sogdiana o Tíbet (c. finales del siglo VII – principios del VIII)","se_ve":"En primer plano, sobre un fondo gris neutro y degradado, reposa en diagonal un cuerno alargado de unos veinte a treinta centímetros, ligeramente curvo, con la boca ancha hacia arriba a la derecha y la punta rematada en una cabeza de animal a la izquierda. This rhyton makes me pause on its surface.
