Its outline is irregular: the top edge is cut on a slant, the sides narrow and widen, and the lower end tapers into an uneven point, like a scrap saved from a larger garment or hanging. The ground is a deep, slightly faded red silk, with fine vertical striations and a soft sheen that shifts with the light. Across it, golden motifs repeat in staggered rows, woven — not printed — in silk and gold thread, so they catch the light with a granular, slightly raised texture. Each complete motif forms a small teardrop-shaped mound: at the bottom, a deer-like animal lies among horizontal lines suggesting ground or water, one foreleg stretched forward, its body in profile and its head turned sharply back and upward. Above it rises a dense tangle of leaves, clouds and branches, crowned at the top by a small round moon. Some motifs are cut off by the fragment's edges, revealing only half an animal or a spray of foliage. The contrast between the flat red field and the luminous gold makes the repeated scenes float, orderly yet alive.","contexto":"This is a silk and gold-thread textile, woven in tabby and brocaded, made in China during the Jin dynasty (1115–1234). Its author is unknown and it is now associated with the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to the source description, the animal — lying down with one foreleg extended and its head turned back — began as a djeiran, a Central Asian antelope. The motif appears on Sogdian silver from the 600s onward and traveled along trade routes to northern China, where it became very popular during the Jin and Yuan dynasties, always paired with a moon held up by clouds. Chinese writers later identified it as the mythical moon-gazing rhinoceros, or as Wu's cow “panting upon seeing the moon.” Its original use is not recorded.","como_mirarla":"Start with the rhythm: follow the golden motifs as they climb the red cloth, slightly offset from row to row. Then move close to a single complete motif and find the animal at its base, its neck turned backward. That small twisted neck changes the whole pattern: it is not only decoration, but a brief scene of an animal looking up at the sky.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual detail: although the motif repeats like a stamp, it never repeats perfectly in the fragment — some moons appear whole, others are cut by the edge, and each animal emerges from a different density of golden foliage.","preguntas":["Why would a motif travel for centuries across silver, trade routes and silk, keeping the same pose almost intact?","What changes when a scene of looking at the moon becomes a pattern repeated across a person's clothing?","Is the animal resting, waiting, or startled — and which details of its body lead you to that reading?"]},"es":{"titulo":"La tela incompleta: una mirada dorada que se repite sobre seda roja y se corta en los bordes del tiempo.","se_ve":"La pieza es un fragmento vertical de tela, mucho más alto que ancho, fotografiado sobre un fondo crema liso. I pause at how fragile this red silk feels, faded with time, with its fine vertical streaks and soft sheen. What moves me most is that the gold is not painted but woven with real gold thread, slightly raised with a grainy texture. Each repeated scene ends with a small round moon held by clouds and dense foliage. I like to imagine it as a night moon on red silk, multiplied in staggered rows like constellations.
