A tiny flame and a thin, wavering thread of smoke rise from the dish, next to a pale wick or small utensil. Behind the stem, a ghost materializes. Only the face is relatively clear: pale skin, downcast heavy-lidded eyes, a small mouth, and an expression of exhaustion or sorrow. Dark, disheveled hair billows around the head like smoke and fades into the background. The body, wrapped in a whitish robe, is translucent and dissolves toward the right, where a second faint hand barely emerges. In the foreground, one long, bony, very pale hand rests over the lamp's base, its elongated fingers spread. Fine vertical gold characters run down the black stem. The palette is restrained — beige, black, ivory, smoky gray, and touches of gold and red — and the light seems to come only from the fragile flame above.","contexto":"Ghost and Oil Lamp, painted in 1810 by Tani Bun'ichi (1787–1818), is a Japanese hanging scroll from the Edo period (1615–1868), executed in ink, color, and gold on silk. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Bun'ichi was the adopted son of the painter and connoisseur Tani Bunchō. A gold inscription on the lamp stand dates the work to the twelfth month of 1810 and explains that the artist did not like painting ghosts, but attempted one after listening to a person named Ono.
