Its outline suggests an open cap: the left and right ends curve downward, the upper edge rises in a soft arch, and the lower edge is straighter. Two bands divide it into four panels—a narrow brown vertical band down the center, and a wider, plain beige horizontal band across the middle. On the right, that band ends in two short, pointed ties; on the left it shows small folds and loose threads. The ground silk is a muted grey-green, worn, slightly wrinkled, and bordered by a frayed tan trim. Embroidered over it in cream, sand, and pale brown, dense vine scrolls curl among large blossoms, pointed leaves, and softer floral shapes. The relief is low and the threads catch the light unevenly, so some leaves look almost sculpted while others nearly dissolve into the ground. Near the top, some forms can be read as small water birds among foliage; below, the flowers are clearer and more symmetrical. The overall impression is of ornament that has survived by becoming part of the fabric: faded, fragile, yet still legible.","contexto":"This is a silk embroidered headpiece made in China during the Liao dynasty, dated by the source to 907–1125. Its maker and original owner are unknown. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held in the Textiles department thanks to a gift from Lisbet Holmes, headpieces of this shape, intersected by two bands and fastened with ties, had a long history in northern China. Their decoration—flowers, leaves, vine scrolls, butterflies, birds, and other animals—relates to the lotus pond theme known from Liao tomb painting. Motifs such as paired ducks or geese and recumbent animals looking backward suggest exchanges between northern China and Central Asia, although the precise place where this example was made is not recorded.","como_mirarla":"First follow the cross formed by the two bands and notice how it both holds the piece together and organizes the decoration. Then move across each of the four panels in search of small animals among the leaves. The unembroidered horizontal band finally reminds you that this was a wearable object, not just a flat image.","dato_curioso":"A gold replica of a headpiece of this same form was found in a tomb dated to 500–550, several centuries before the Liao silk example shown here.","preguntas":["What changes when you imagine this textile folded and tied around a head rather than flat and untied in a museum?","What can the meeting of lotus-pond motifs and animals from Central Asia tell us about movement between regions?","Which marks of wear do you regard as damage, and which as part of the object's biography?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Tocado — Bordado · Seda — China, dinastía Liao (907-1125) — Cleveland Museum of Art, donación de Lisbet Holmes","se_ve":"La pieza se presenta extendida y plana sobre un fondo gris muy claro, vista desde arriba, con su lado largo en horizontal. When I look closely I imagine my hands tracing that worn, grayish green silk, with its frayed brown edge and soft wrinkles.
