This is the decorated back, in a silvery gray with dull reflections and small patches of green corrosion, especially near the center and edges. In the middle rises a smooth, shiny, rounded knob, like a small dome. Around it, within a circle edged with a beaded cord, plump animals twist among vine stems, broad leaves, and tight clusters of grapes. Their raised bodies, legs, and turned heads melt into the vegetation, so a careful look is needed to separate them. A second, wider ring repeats the theme at a smaller scale: birds with outstretched wings, butterflies or insects, fluttering leaves, and more fruit, all modeled in low relief and arranged in continuous rotation with no single starting point. The outer rim carries a row of small repeated florets. The surface is neither uniform nor flat: highlights gather on the highest reliefs, shadows pool in the hollows, and the greenish crust adds a rough texture to the hard, cold metal. The overall impression is of a dense, moving garden contained within a perfect circle.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is an Animal-and-Grape Mirror made by an unknown artist in China during the Tang dynasty (618-907), dated to the late 600s and cast in bronze. Bronze mirrors of this period had a smooth, polished front for reflecting and a back decorated in relief, which is the side shown here. Mirrors with animals among grapevines were a characteristic Tang motif. Grapes and intertwined vines came into Chinese art through exchanges with regions to the west, combining foreign motifs with local bronze-casting traditions. The exact place of manufacture and the mirror's original owner are unknown.","como_mirarla":"First look at the bulging central knob and let your eye move outward in circles, as if following a rotation. Then search for the animals hidden among the vines: they appear and disappear between leaves and fruit. Notice how the green corrosion interrupts the silvery shine and reveals the object's age.","dato_curioso":"What we see is the back of the mirror: the reflective surface was the other, smooth, polished side, and the central knob was used to thread a cord for holding or hanging it.","preguntas":["How does the experience of a mirror change when its most elaborate side is the one that does not reflect you?","What relationships between animals, plants, and abundance might this design have suggested to someone in the Tang period?","Should the green corrosion be preserved as part of the object's history, or would polishing it back to a shine bring us closer to the original work?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Espejo de animales y uvas, finales de los años 600","se_ve":"Se ve de frente un disco circular de bronce, centrado sobre un fondo que pasa del gris oscuro en la parte superior al gris pálido abajo.
