The figure is a kneeling man, seen from his right side but with his face turned slightly toward the viewer. He wears a long, shoulder-length wig with fine vertical striations and a patterned lower edge, a short-sleeved garment, and a long skirt. His eyes are almond-shaped and heavy-lidded, his nose straight, his mouth closed in a faint, serene smile. His right arm extends down, the open hand resting near his knee; his feet, with carefully carved toes, press against the base behind him. In front of him, and partly hiding his torso, stands a rectangular altar. On top of it squats a baboon with a voluminous, rounded body, short forelegs, long feet, and a head in profile with a prominent muzzle, yet eyes that seem to look forward. The whole piece rests on a thick rectangular plinth with rounded ends, carved with rows of hieroglyphs along its sides and front, and with more inscription on the front of the altar. The stone is dark gray, mottled and slightly speckled, smooth and satiny on the bodies but rougher on the base, where there is a noticeable chip at the front lower edge.","contexto":"This is a New Kingdom Egyptian sculpture, Dynasty 18, from the reign of Amenhotep III, dated circa 1391–1353 BCE and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to the museum, Minemheb was a court official who helped prepare for the king's 30-year jubilee festival. He considered that work the high point of his career, so his title as chief of construction for the jubilee temple is the main one recorded on the statue. The author is unknown. It is carved in granodiorite, an extremely hard stone, yet with careful detail and superb modeling.","como_mirarla":"First look at the baboon, because it occupies the center and faces forward, and only then notice the man kneeling behind it. Next, compare their expressions: human and animal share a similar calm. Finally, look down at the base and altar to find the inscriptions and the small chip that reveals the passage of time.","dato_curioso":"It is a statue within a statue: Minemheb does not appear alone, but kneels to present a small altar on which squats another sculpture, the god Thoth in baboon form.","preguntas":["Why would an official choose to be remembered kneeling and presenting a god, rather than standing on his own?","What changes when the animal figure, not the human, occupies the center and receives the offering's place of honor?","How does working in such a hard, dark stone affect the sense of permanence this statue was meant to convey?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Estatua de Minemheb","se_ve":"Sobre un fondo liso de estudio, que pasa del gris oscuro arriba al gris claro abajo, se presenta en vista de tres cuartos una sola escultura de piedra oscura, centrada e iluminada suavemente desde arriba a la izquierda. What strikes me is how a stone as hard as granodiorite looks soft and satiny on the kneeling man’s body and face, yet feels rough and mottled on the thick plinth, where the chip on the lower front edge is still visible.
