It is a circular disc with a slightly raised rim, photographed from its decorated back. At the center sits a small, round, dark knob, worn and shiny, like a button. Around it, on a mottled green surface marked by corrosion — turquoise, olive, and rusty brown patches with a rough, grainy texture — are flowers and birds in relief. Three large clusters of silver-gray blossoms and leaves, finely incised with veins and petals, appear at the top, lower left, and lower right. Between them are three larger birds, also silvery and engraved feather by feather: one at upper left bends its head downward, another at upper right seems to descend, and a third at the bottom, dark gray, walks with its head turned back. Scattered among them are much smaller golden birds in flight and curling, ribbon-like gold shapes that create a sense of movement across the surface. The contrast is striking: tarnished, matte silver and bright gold against the aged green bronze, as if a garden were floating on an old pond.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this work was made in China in the mid-700s, during the Tang dynasty (618–907), by an unknown maker. It is bronze with gold and silver cutouts over a lacquer base, and it belongs to the Chinese Art department. In Tang China, bronze mirrors were luxury objects: one side was polished to reflect, while the back was carefully decorated and often pierced at the center so a cord could be passed through. Flowers and birds were highly appreciated motifs in the art of the period. The mirror's exact owner and place of use are not known.","como_mirarla":"Start at the dark central knob and move outward in a circle, following the gold ribbons and small birds as if they were in motion. Then compare the large, heavy silver motifs with those delicate gold accents. Noticing that we are looking at the back — not the reflective face — changes the piece from a utilitarian object into a small, decorated landscape.","dato_curioso":"In Chinese bronze mirrors, the polished, reflective side is the opposite of the decorated one: the ornate back, with its central knob for a cord, was meant to be held, looked at, and admired.","preguntas":["What might it have felt like to hold this mirror by a cord through its central knob and turn it over between its shiny face and its decorated back?","Why decorate so lavishly a side that no one sees while the mirror is in use?","What does the contrast between the fresh flowers and birds and the corroded surface tell us about the passage of time?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Espejo con flores y aves en recortes de oro y plata sobre base de laca, China, mediados del siglo VIII","se_ve":"La pieza ocupa casi todo el encuadre, vista desde arriba y de frente sobre un fondo liso gris claro, con una sombra suave abajo a la derecha. I focus on what time has done to the bronze. The circular disc is like a vault and the central knob could be the pole star, the fixed point around which everything turns. The three large silver birds are recognizable constellations, and the tiny golden birds are shooting stars trailing wavy ribbons like wake lines. The corroded green background reminds me of an ancient sky, mottled and deep, where gold shines brighter. It is a mirror that does not reflect faces but a small universe in motion.","es":"Cuando lo miro desde arriba pienso en un mapa celeste.
