The flask is shaped for carrying in the hand: a flattened, almost circular body tapers upward into broad shoulders, a short, straight cylindrical neck, and two thick loop handles that curve from below the neck down to the shoulders, leaving two dark, triangular openings. The rim at the top is chipped and uneven. Its surface is sandy beige terracotta, matte, coarse, and heavily pitted, with small bumps, eroded patches, and a slightly powdery look, especially around the neck and handles. Soft, diffuse light falls from above, creating a short dark shadow to the lower right. On the visible face, a large circular medallion in low relief dominates the body, ringed by a border of raised dots. Inside, a frontal human figure stands with legs apart and both arms extended sideways in prayer. The head and features are blurred by wear. At his feet, on either side, are smaller crouching animal shapes, barely legible. The reverse side, scale reference, and any inscription are not visible.","contexto":"This is a pilgrim's flask from Egypt in the Coptic period, dated 400–600 CE and made of terracotta by an unknown maker. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it bears Saint Menas, an early martyr of the Christian Church whose shrine lay in the desert southwest of Alexandria. Flasks like this were probably used by pilgrims to carry oil taken from the lamp burning over the saint's tomb, and were probably made near the shrine itself. Their decoration often hinted at their place of origin, as here. It is now in the museum's Medieval Art collection.","como_mirarla":"Start with the worn medallion and try to outline the standing figure with outstretched arms. Then look for the animals crouching at his feet: that small detail identifies the saint and connects the object to his shrine. Finally, notice the broken neck and rough surface, marks of age and handling.","dato_curioso":"Saint Menas is traditionally shown standing with his arms raised in prayer, flanked by two camels kneeling at his feet — a motif that appears, though much worn, on this flask.","preguntas":["What did it mean to carry home a little oil from a saint's tomb rather than just a souvenir?","How does the image change once you can make out the small animals at the figure's feet?","What traces of travel, touch, and time can you read in the worn surface of a small everyday-sacred object?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cantimplora de peregrino con san Menas","se_ve":"En el centro se ve, de pie y en vertical, una sola vasija pequeña, fotografiada sobre un fondo liso en degradado que pasa del gris carbón en la parte alta al gris casi blanco abajo. I focus on the sandy beige surface, matte and heavily pitted, full of small lumps and eroded areas that speak of age.
