On the left, a large blue-skinned deity occupies almost the full height. It has six arms, long black hair, a pink halo edged in yellow and green petal-like rays, and its red tongue sticking out. It wears long necklaces, a bright yellow garment around the waist, and a red striped cloth behind its body. In one hand it raises a yellow curved sword; in another, lower down, it holds by the hair a severed head with a mustache and a startled expression. One foot rests on a pink flower. At the lower left, much smaller, a woman kneels with eyes lowered, wearing a mauve-pink sari and a green blouse. On the right, another blue-black deity stands on two feet on the teal head of a huge serpent whose body forms broad loops over a black strip at the bottom. The god wears a red dotted cape, pale garments, and a peacock feather with a green tip. Flanking him, two female figures with very long teal tails that narrow to a point, red spotted veils, and hands joined in prayer, look up at him in profile.","contexto":"Leaf from a Kalighat album, painted around 1890 in Kolkata, Bengal, eastern India, by an unknown artist, in gum tempera, graphite and ink on paper. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. On the recto, Krishna transforms into the goddess Kali when Radha's husband approaches, and Radha becomes his devotee; according to the museum, she symbolizes the human soul longing for god. On the verso, Krishna subdues the serpent Kaliya, who was poisoning a pool of the Yamuna River, and dances on its head while Kaliya's wives beg for mercy. Who painted this particular leaf is not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the raised tongue and the severed head on the left: this is not only Kali, but Krishna in disguise. Then look down at the small, calm woman at his feet, and turn to the other side to find the same dark god, now dancing on the serpent while two figures plead with joined hands.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual fact: the serpent's wives are not drawn with legs or complete snake bodies, but with very long, tapering teal tails that make them look like mermaids standing upright on the water.","preguntas":["How does the meaning of the scene change when we know the fearsome goddess on the left is actually Krishna in disguise?","What effect does the difference in scale create between the deities and the women who worship or plead with them?","Why might an album made for looking combine a scene of devotion on one side with a scene of combat on the other?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Hoja de un álbum de Kalighat: Krishna como Kali","se_ve":"Se presentan dos pinturas, una junto a la otra, sobre papel beige envejecido, con fibras, manchas y bordes algo irregulares visibles. I focus on the beige paper, with its fibers, stains and irregular edges.
