At the center, an adult man with pale skin leans sharply forward, caught mid-speech. His right arm reaches out with an open hand and tense fingers, while his left hand grips his clothing at his chest. He wears a short cream tunic and a long, glossy cloak in turquoise-green with a yellow-gold edge, draped with a lilac mantle over one shoulder. The folds are deep, shiny and fluid, almost like wet cloth. His legs and bare feet are exposed; one foot advances over the edge of the base. His curly hair and short beard are light brown, his mouth is half-open and one cheek is marked by a conspicuous patch of red, as if flushed by effort. To the viewer's right, a marble-effect pedestal with dark veins supports a triangular sheet covered in tiny handwriting. Below it, framed by green garlands, is a small painted relief: a nude figure reclines on a cloud, and underneath, in a coastal landscape with trees, ships and a tiny orator can be seen. The surface throughout is smooth, bright and reflective.","contexto":"This is Figure of Demosthenes, made around 1800 by Enoch Wood (1759–1840) in Burslem, Staffordshire, England, in lead-glazed earthenware. It depicts Demosthenes (384–322 BC), the Athenian orator, in the middle of a discourse. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where the piece is held, ceramic figures of literary or mythological subjects suggested knowledge and intellectual refinement, and were common ornaments in middle- and upper-class homes in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The scene on the plinth refers to the tradition of Demosthenes declaiming by the sea, with Hermes, god of eloquence, above him. The exact original owner is not known.","como_mirarla":"First follow the extended right arm and the forward lean, as if the voice were moving ahead of the body. Then look at the left hand clutching the cloak and at the reddened cheek, which make the speech feel like physical effort. Finally, move to the small panel on the plinth: that tiny scene explains who he is better than a written label.","dato_curioso":"According to ancient tradition, preserved by Plutarch, Demosthenes trained his voice by declaiming by the sea, trying to make himself heard above the waves; that episode is the one alluded to in miniature on the plinth.","preguntas":["What does the body communicate here that words alone could not?","Why would a household around 1800 want an ancient orator as a domestic ornament?","How does your reading of the figure change when you discover the tiny scene hidden on the pedestal?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Figura de Demóstenes","se_ve":"Una escultura de cerámica vidriada se sostiene sobre una base rectangular azul intenso, frente a un fondo gris oscuro que se aclara hacia abajo. Representa a Demóstenes (384–322 a. I focus on how the lead-glazed earthenware catches the light.
