Her pale, smooth body is turned toward the viewer: her head tilts to one side, her legs are extended and slightly apart, and one breast and her belly are fully visible. She wears almost nothing except a blue ribbon in her curly, upswept hair, another blue band loosely tied around her left forearm, and a scrap of white cloth slipping from her right shoulder. With that hand she loosely embraces a small, plump Cupid with curly brown hair and a blue bow on his back where his wings should be read. He kneels beside her, hands pressed together in supplication, face turned up to her. Between Venus's legs she holds a quiver of arrows with bright blue fletching, blue-and-gold bands, and pointed tips that both cover and draw attention to her sex. On the right, two grey-blue doves with spread wings nestle in the drapery. Behind them all, great folds of blue-grey and pinkish fabric billow like curtains or clouds, rendered in fine, hatched, grainy lines in soft blues, greys, pinks and flesh tones that mimic pastel chalk on tinted paper.","contexto":"This 1768 French print was made by Louis-Marin Bonnet (1736-1793) after François Boucher (1703-1770). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Boucher produced many paintings of female nudes thinly veiled as Roman goddesses for aristocratic patrons, while Bonnet's colour chalk-manner prints offered middle-class buyers sumptuous yet affordable versions of his hugely popular images. Here Venus, goddess of love, keeps Cupid's quiver while a tiny Cupid pleads for its return. By holding his arrows, she, rather than he, holds the power to stir love. The work belongs to the Prints department and was acquired through the James Parmelee Fund.","como_mirarla":"Start with Venus's gaze, directed straight at you, and then follow her left hand down to the quiver she is withholding. Next, look at Cupid's clasped hands on the left and the doves fluttering on the right. That small tug-of-war over the arrows changes a reclining nude into a scene about who controls desire.","dato_curioso":"The chalk-manner technique was designed to imitate the grainy texture of a chalk or pastel drawing, so a reproducible print could feel like an original drawing in the hand of its buyer.","preguntas":["Who really has power in this scene: the one who pleads, or the one who looks out at us while refusing to let go?","How does the print change if we read the quiver not as a prop, but as a weapon being kept out of reach?","What does it mean that a mythological disguise made nudity more acceptable, and also more marketable, in 1768?"]},"es":{"titulo":"El Amor pide a Venus que le devuelva sus armas — Louis-Marin Bonnet según François Boucher, 1768","se_ve":"En primer plano, una mujer joven desnuda se reclina en diagonal sobre un lecho de telas revueltas que ocupa casi toda la imagen. If you look closely you will see this is not a painting but a print pretending to be pastel. Bonnet used the chalk manner technique to imitate Boucher's soft and grainy strokes. Notice the fine lines that build the fabrics and the skin, and how the blues and pinks sit on the tinted ground. Everything was designed to make the image look luxurious yet reproducible. Also note how the vivid blue of the quiver and ribbons contrasts with the pale tones of the body.","es":"Si te acercas verás que no es pintura sino un grabado que finge ser pastel.
