In the foreground, the Virgin Mary sits enthroned, her body slightly frontal and her face serene with downcast eyes. She wears a low crown and a veil that reveals long wavy locks over her shoulders. Her mantle falls in deep, abundant and angular folds covering her knees and pooling at her feet, with traces of gilding and polychromy along the edges. On her lap, to the viewer’s right, the naked Christ Child, with plump flesh and curly hair, sits in profile and reaches with both hands toward a small object held by Mary, now worn and unrecognizable. Behind them, the high rectangular back of the throne is pierced with Gothic tracery of trefoil arches and quatrefoil motifs, showing brownish veining of the alabaster and remnants of bluish-grey pigment. Soft light models the volumes, highlights the ivory luster of the stone and casts shadows between the drapery. Chipping and wear are visible on the crown, the Child’s feet and the oval base of the throne.","contexto":"According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, the work is attributed to Gil de Siloé, a sculptor active in Burgos around 1475–1505, and is dated to about 1480 within 15th-century Spanish culture. It is carved in alabaster with traces of gilding and polychromy. The seated Virgin and Child was one of the most popular themes in medieval Christian art. The source notes that alabaster was ideal for rendering the fleshiness of Jesus, the lush folds of Mary’s cloak and the fine details of the throne. The object Christ reaches for is now unrecognizable due to the stone’s fragility; it may have been a book or a piece of fruit. Given its small size, it was probably intended for private devotion.","como_mirarla":"Start with the central gesture of the hands where the Child reaches for Mary’s offering. Follow the deep folds of Mary’s mantle that lead the eye from the base up to her calm face. Notice the delicate Gothic tracery on the throne back and the subtle remains of color and wear that speak to the material’s age.","dato_curioso":"Spanish alabaster sculptures of the late 15th century were often made in small scale for private devotion, and artists like Gil de Siloé were renowned for combining Northern Gothic detail with expressive drapery.","preguntas":["What do you think the lost object in Mary’s hand might have been and how would it change the meaning?","How does the sculpture’s small, intimate scale shape your imagination of how it was used?","What contrast do you see between Mary’s stillness and the Child’s active movement?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Virgen con el Niño entronizada","se_ve":"Escultura pequeña de alabastro fotografiada sobre fondo oscuro, centrada y de frente. I focus on what the alabaster still shows and what has been lost.
