Seen head-on, its vertical stroke runs along the right margin and its horizontal stroke extends across the bottom, forming an architectural framework of irregular compartments outlined in intense blue, vermilion red and burnished gold. Inside each niche, framed by trefoil arches, appears a half-length figure wearing ochre, blue and reddish robes, holding a scroll or a book; their faces are pale and schematic with black ink outlines. At the base of the letter, reclining beneath a stylized hillock, sleeps Jesse, bearded, dressed in white with an ochre mantle, from whom appears to grow the branching stem that supports his descendants. The text surrounding the initial is written in two dense columns in tiny black and red gothic minuscule, with headings in blue and red at the top. The illumination is flat, with gold that catches the light, and the terminals of the letter end in scrollwork with palmettes and stylized dragon heads in blue and gold. Small details such as the linear folds of the garments, the white dots of the tooled gold and a faint moisture stain along the lower edge become visible when looking slowly.","contexto":"This folio comes from a manuscript Bible made around 1275–1300, probably in southern France, perhaps in Toulouse, according to the museum. It is executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum and belongs to the bound volume category. The source notes that in the 13th century the Bible was, for the first time, produced as a single volume with an officially sanctioned sequence of books and chapters, known as the Vulgate, the Latin translation by Saint Jerome in the fourth century from Hebrew and Greek. Decoration was arranged hierarchically to signal the importance of texts: full or almost full-page initials for the first prologue, Genesis and the first Gospel, historiated initials for each book and illuminated initials for prologues. This L opens the Gospel of Matthew and depicts the Tree of Jesse, the genealogical theme of Christ.","como_mirarla":"Start at the bottom where Jesse sleeps, then follow the trunk upward as it becomes a letter. Notice each small niche and how blue and gold organize the vertical reading. Finish with the tiny surrounding script that reveals the true scale of the illuminator's work.","dato_curioso":"Thirteenth-century single-volume Bibles, sometimes called Paris or university Bibles, standardized for the first time the order of chapters and books still followed in the Western biblical tradition.","preguntas":["How does the meaning of the text change when a letter is turned into a family tree?","What do you feel when the same format repeats small figures in such ornate niches?","What connection do you imagine between the sleeping Jesse at the base and the figures that sprout above him?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Inicial historiada L: el Árbol de Jesé, Evangelio de Mateo, folio 391v","se_ve":"En el centro de una página de pergamino color marfil se alza una enorme letra L que ocupa casi toda la altura de la caja de texto. Its vertical and horizontal strokes create a structure with compartments like ordered constellations. Inside each trefoil arch there is an ancestor holding a scroll or book, like named stars aligned in a genealogy. Below, the reclining Jesse is the point of origin, the horizon from which the branching stem grows. The little dots of punched gold remind me of points of light. It is not the firmament, but it shares that medieval logic of ordering the visible universe into little boxes to understand where we come from.","es":"Cuando miro esta inicial L pienso en un mapa del cielo.
