On the left, the dark, almost black binding and the layered edge of many vellum leaves are visible; the right-hand page, a warm creamy ivory, fills most of the frame, with a sliver of the facing page at the far right. The page is ruled into two dense columns of tiny dark-brown Gothic script in Latin, with red headings, among them a prominent XXVI near the top of the left column, and small red and blue initials and pen flourishes scattered through the text. In the lower part of the right column sits the focal miniature: a large historiated letter L, painted deep blue with fine white and pink ornament and touches of gold, its long stem running up the margin and ending in curling tendrils. Inside its small rectangular field, against a rose-pink ground, a kneeling figure in a blue robe raises his hands toward a seated, bearded figure; two pale horns rise from the kneeling man's head. The parchment shows gentle cockling, faint stains and wide, quiet margins. The light is even and soft, revealing the matte surface of the vellum, the slight sheen of gold, and the crisp, hair-thin strokes of the scribe's pen.","contexto":"This is folio 46v of a Latin Bible made, according to the source, in southern France, probably Toulouse, around 1275-1300, by an unknown maker. It is worked in ink, tempera and gold on vellum and is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The text is the Vulgate, Jerome's fourth-century Latin translation, which in the thirteenth century began to circulate as a single volume with an established order of books and chapters. Decoration was hierarchical: the largest initials opened the most important texts, historiated initials marked each book, and smaller illuminated initials marked the prologues. The exact workshop is unknown.","como_mirarla":"First take in the whole page and notice how little space the image occupies compared with the text. Then follow the long initial L in the right-hand column down to the small scene at its base. That shift in scale is what turns reading into contemplation.","dato_curioso":"Moses's horns come from a Latin rendering of the Hebrew passage describing his radiant face after receiving the Law; medieval artists often painted that radiance literally, as two small horns.","preguntas":["How does the tiny scale of the sacred scene change its authority beside so much text?","What does the image add that the words of Numbers alone do not say?","Why give Moses horns, and how does that detail shape how we see him today?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Folio 46v, Números: inicial historiada L con Moisés, con cuernos, arrodillado ante Dios","se_ve":"La fotografía muestra un libro abierto sobre un fondo gris neutro. I pause on the material itself: warm ivory vellum with soft cockling and faint age spots. The pink ground of the miniature highlights the intimate scene inside the blue and gold L: a kneeling figure in a blue robe, with two pale little horns on the head, raising hands toward another bearded seated figure.
