In the foreground, across the lower half, a line of insects stands upright on their hind legs, holding on to one another as if dancing a farandole. Their large veined wings, spotted shells, and dark rounded bodies, seen mostly from behind, resemble long dresses, trains, and formal coats. Long antennae curve above small heads, thin legs step on a ground suggested by a few horizontal strokes, and at lower left a tiny insect has fallen onto its back. Above them stretches a horizontal log decorated with garlands of leaves. On it sits an orchestra of other insects, upright and facing forward, playing improvised instruments made from flowers, leaves, and stems; one proudly raises a small bud like a scepter. In the background, faint palm-like plants on the left and grasses on the right barely emerge from the paper. The linework is fine, dense, and crosshatched in the shadows, giving volume to shells and wings without weighing down the festive lightness. The artist's signature appears at lower left.","contexto":"\"An Insect Ball\" (1835) is a drawing in pen, black ink, and watercolor by Jean-Jacques Grandville (French, 1803–1847), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art through the bequest of Muriel Butkin. According to the museum, Grandville drew the insects with naturalistic accuracy while also making them a satire of contemporary society: standing on their hind legs, their folded wings evoke 1800s dresses and coats. Grandville was one of the best-known illustrators of the early 19th century, famed for fantastical images of animals behaving like humans. This design was one of more than 50 illustrations he published in the periodical Le Magasin pittoresque.","como_mirarla":"Begin with the dancing chain in the foreground and try to read each insect's posture before looking for its species. Then raise your eyes to the orchestra on the log: the joke sharpens when you notice the flowers turned into instruments. A small fallen insect at lower left breaks the elegance and adds a touch of slapstick.","dato_curioso":"Surprising visual observation: no ballroom was drawn at all — a garlanded log serves as the stage, and leaves and flowers do the work of decoration and musical instruments.","preguntas":["What human behaviors does Grandville mock by giving them to insects, and which ones do we still recognize today?","How does the scene change if we look at it first as a natural history study and then as a society ball?","Which insect would you choose to represent a musician, a dancer, or an onlooker, and why?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Un baile de insectos — Jean-Jacques Grandville, 1835","se_ve":"Sobre un papel color crema envejecido, de esquinas redondeadas, se despliega una escena delicada en tinta negra y aguadas muy pálidas de azul, amarillo y ocre. What holds my attention is the support itself: an aged cream-colored paper with rounded corners that has received black ink with astonishing precision. The insects form a chain like stars joined by imaginary lines, advancing in step on their hind legs while their dark wings look like capes seen against the light.
