In the center, a man with a long curly wig sits in a high, reddish armchair, legs crossed, holding a sheet of paper in one hand and gesturing theatrically with the other, his mouth open mid-reading. He wears knee breeches, stockings, buckled shoes, and a coat with wide cuffs. Four women in voluminous, full-skirted 18th-century dresses flank him, two on each side. On the left, one clasps her hands to her chest while the other leans back laughing, palm raised. On the right, one reaches toward the reader in delight, while the last woman, at the far edge, rests her head on her hand, eyes lowered, slumped against a small table. Behind them is an elegant room: a tiled floor, a paneled door slightly ajar in the center, floral wallpaper, two framed landscapes, and two classical busts on pedestals. The red chalk warms the chairs and gowns against the pale gray drawing, giving the scene a light, staged, theatrical feel, as if frozen at a moment of exaggerated reaction.","contexto":"This drawing, probably made around 1725–1726, is by the French artist Charles Coypel (1694–1752), son of Antoine Coypel and himself also a playwright. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is the only known drawing for a series of prints Coypel designed after scenes from plays by Molière (c. 1622–1673). It illustrates Act 3, Scene 2 of 'Les Femmes savantes' ('The Learned Ladies'): the pompous Trissotin reads his own work to Philaminte, Bélise, and Armande, dazzled by his pseudo-intellectualism. At the far right, Philaminte's daughter Henriette remains unconvinced.","como_mirarla":"Start with the man reading at the center and follow the hands and glances moving outward from him. Then compare the four women: three lean in with excitement, while the woman at the far right withdraws. Notice the busts and inscriptions behind them — they turn the room's pretension to learning into part of the joke.","dato_curioso":"A telling visual observation: the busts flanking the door are inscribed 'Aristote' on the left and 'Sapho' on the right, so classical philosophy and poetry literally preside over a very hollow literary reading.","preguntas":["How does the drawing mock intellectual pretension without needing us to hear a single word of the poem?","Why place Henriette apart at the edge, and how does her posture change our reading of the other women?","What role do the busts of Aristotle and Sappho play: decoration, authority, or another layer of satire?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Trissotin lee a Philaminte, Bélise y Armande","se_ve":"Se ve una escena de interior, horizontal, dibujada con trazo fino de grafito, aguadas grises suaves y toques de sanguina sobre un papel crema ya amarillento. I pause on the creamy paper, now yellowed with age, and how the fine graphite line holds the whole scene together. The soft gray washes are very light and the touches of sanguine only warm a few spots, like the reddish armchairs and the skirts, creating contrast without overwhelming the drawing. I notice the balance between line and wash, and how the background with floral wallpaper and the two busts on pedestals is just suggested so it does not compete with the figures at the center.","es":"Me detengo en el papel crema ya amarillento y en cómo el grafito fino sostiene toda la escena.
