The scene is enclosed by a feigned architecture: two classical columns with golden capitals and bases, the left one white and veined like marble, the right one reddish orange, supporting an entablature and a projecting base as if it were a small altar or window. At the top, a small tablet reads 'Missa beate mari...'. Inside, against a wooden cross, a pale blue sky, and a green field with slender plants on the right, the Virgin sits on the ground. She wears a large deep-blue mantle patterned with golden motifs, a white veil, and a thin halo; her face, turned downward, expresses contained grief. Across her lap lies the dead Christ: long brown hair, bearded, with a radiant halo, a limp torso, bare feet, and only a white cloth around his hips. A red wound opens in his side and there are marks on his hands; his right arm falls heavily. Below, an enormous initial 'S', blue with flowers and leaves on gold, introduces Latin text in black Gothic lettering with red rubrics and a small blue initial. Along the right margin hangs a painted chain with a tassel.","contexto":"This is folio 53r of a Book of Hours following the Use of Rome, printed in Paris in 1510 by Guillaume Le Rouge, active between 1493 and 1517, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume contains 112 printed folios on parchment, bound. Books of Hours were the most widespread devotional books of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, containing prayers for different times of day and feasts of the Virgin. This page shows the Pietà before a text beginning 'Salve sancta parens,' associated with the Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as the heading indicates. Its original owner is not known.","como_mirarla":"First look at the exchange of hands at the center: Mary's hand rests near Christ's wound while his body slips downward. Then notice how the painted architecture frames the scene like a small altar, and end with the decorated initial, where image, prayer, and ornament become one page.","dato_curioso":"Although the book was printed, its image and initials were painted and gilded by hand on parchment, a common practice in early printed Books of Hours, which could make each copy different from the others.","preguntas":["How does the architectural frame change the Pietà into something like an altar for private prayer?","What effect is created by combining mechanical printing with painting and gilding done by hand?","How does Mary hold grief here: through her face, her posture, or the way she touches Christ's body?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de Horas (uso de Roma), fol.
