At the centre rises a massive stone portico with a flat entablature, sloping walls and four columns with ornate capitals; between them stand lower walls carved with reliefs of human figures in profile. Through the central opening, smaller doorways recede in perspective into a bright interior courtyard. To the left extends a long, plain, sloping wall, partly ruined, which balances the composition. The foreground is rough, uneven ground in beige, grey and sepia washes, with grassy patches, scattered carved blocks fallen on their sides, and a path of flat stones leading to the temple steps. Five small figures animate the scene: one at left gestures with a raised arm while another sits on the ground; two rest in the shade of the portico and a fifth, in dark clothing and a white skirt, descends the steps. The sky is pale, with faint clouds, and low hills fade on the right. At the bottom, beneath the image, a caption reads 'TEMPLE OF WADY DABOD, NUBIA.' The lines are fine, the modelling soft, and the overall tonality warm, dusty and quiet.","contexto":"According to the source data, this is 'Temple at Wady Dabod, Nubia', a colour lithograph from 1848, from 'Egypt and Nubia, Volume II', held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. David Roberts (Scottish, 1796–1864) made the original drawing, and Louis Haghe (British, 1806–1885) translated it into lithography. Roberts travelled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838–1839, drawing monuments that then fascinated the European public. The building shown is probably the one now known as the Temple of Debod. The exact circumstances of this sheet's edition are not stated in the source data.","como_mirarla":"Start with the human figures: they are tiny, yet they reveal the monument's scale. Then follow the flat stones in the foreground toward the central doorway, as if walking back into the building. Finally, look closely at the reliefs and capitals: the lithograph records them with archaeological care, but softens them within an idealized landscape.","dato_curioso":"The Temple of Debod did not stay in Nubia: it was dismantled during the international campaign to save Nubian monuments threatened by the Aswan High Dam, gifted by Egypt to Spain, and rebuilt in Madrid, where it can still be visited today.","preguntas":["What does this serene, almost empty view make us feel about an ancient temple, and what might it leave out of everyday life in Nubia in the 1800s?","Why do you think 19th-century European artists so often included small local figures beside monumental ruins?","How does our reading change knowing that this temple was later dismantled and rebuilt in another country?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Templo de Wady Dabod, Nubia","se_ve":"La estampa horizontal, impresa sobre papel crema con márgenes amplios y casi vacíos, muestra un antiguo templo egipcio visto de frente y ligeramente desde la izquierda, a plena luz del día. I linger on the cream paper and how the beige, grey and sepia washes build the dust and weight of the stone.
