In the left third rises an Islamic funerary complex dominated by a tall, slender minaret of stacked tiers, carved balconies and a pointed finial, beside a large ribbed dome. Clustered at its foot are walls, arches, smaller domes and stone buildings at several levels, some of them looking partly ruined. On the far left a thick, eroded wall is cut off by the edge of the image; to the right the view opens towards lesser buildings, another distant dome and, blurred on the horizon, the silhouette of the Citadel on raised ground. The foreground is an empty, uneven sandy plain, drawn with fine lines and soft shading that suggest dust, stones and shallow dips. At lower right, four small figures in long robes, their heads covered, sit on the ground talking or resting beside low tombs with upright markers. Their tiny scale stresses the monumentality of the architecture. The sky fills almost the upper half, nearly white, with clouds only faintly indicated. Along the bottom are handwritten signatures at both sides and the publisher's line in the centre.","contexto":"According to the source, this colour lithograph, dated 1848, comes from Egypt and Nubia, Volume III, and was published in London by F. G. Moon, at 20 Threadneedle Street. It is based on work by Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864) and was made by British lithographer Louis Haghe (1806–1885). The print belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, through the Bequest of John L. Severance Fund is not stated; the credit given is the Bequest of John Bonebrake. The source does not name the specific tomb shown, so that identification remains uncertain.","como_mirarla":"Start with the minaret and follow its vertical line down to the dome and the walls below.
