Seen from a sandy rise, the view runs diagonally toward a monumental Egyptian temple occupying the center and right. The foreground is a slope of ochre and brown sand, marked by shallow ruts, stones, and soft shadows; a pale, winding path descends toward the entrance. Tiny against the architecture, several men in turbans and dark robes carry staffs or spears as they walk, two of them crouching at the left of the group. To the right are mounds, low half-buried walls, and remains of mud-brick dwellings. The temple itself is rendered in very pale, almost white stone. On the right rise two great trapezoidal pylons covered with large relief figures drawn in fine, faint lines; between them are the gateway and a columned portico. Stretching left are columned halls with broad capitals, perimeter walls, and flat roofs at several levels. Beyond lies a dark greenish plain, then a pale mountain range under a vast pinkish-gray sky streaked with nearly transparent horizontal clouds. The washlike texture is soft throughout, with no harsh contrasts.","contexto":"This color lithograph, dated 1847, comes from Egypt and Nubia, Volume I, after Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864), lithographed by Louis Haghe (1806–1885) and associated with London publisher F. G. Moon (1797–1871), according to the source data. Roberts traveled through Egypt in 1838–1839 and his drawings were widely published as tinted lithographs in Britain. The subject is the Temple of Edfu, in Upper Egypt — Apollinopolis in the print's title — dedicated to Horus and built in the Ptolemaic period. The work is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a bequest of John Bonebrake.","como_mirarla":"Start with the tiny figures in the foreground, then lift your eyes to the pylon: that jump in scale is the point of the image. Next, follow the temple from right to left and notice how finely the relief figures are merely outlined. Finally, look at the low dwellings half-buried on the right, which show the site as an inhabited, partly buried place rather than an isolated monument.","dato_curioso":"Surprising visual fact: the immense carved figures on the pylon are not fully modeled, but left as delicate outlines, so in the sunlight the gateway looks like a giant sheet of paper covered in drawings.","preguntas":["What does the extreme difference in scale between the people and the temple make you feel about human beings in relation to history?","Why might a nineteenth-century British audience have wanted such a calm, empty, almost untouched view of Egypt?","Does the print depict an ancient ruin, a living place, or both at once? ¿Qué detalles sostienen tu respuesta?"]}},"etiquetas":{"en":["egypt","edfu temple","color lithograph","19th century","david roberts","orientalist travel","archaeological landscape","desert","pylon","monumentality","calm"],"es":["egipto","templo de edfú","litografía en color","siglo xix","david roberts","viajes orientalistes","paisaje arqueológico","desierto","pilono","monumentalidad","serenidad"]},"objetos":["templo egipcio","pilonos con relieves","columnas","figuras humanas con lanzas","arena","viviendas de adobe","llanura","montañas","cielo nublado","sendero"],"colores":["#D8C39F","#B68A4E","#EFE6D2","#6A6B5A","#968873","#3F4550"],"animo":["sereno","vasto"],"epoca":"1847","certeza":"alta","advertencias":["Sin contenido sensible"],"capa":{"voces":[{"guia":"la restauradora","en":"I pause to look at how this 1847 color lithograph preserves its cream paper margins and the printed English title at the bottom.
