In the foreground, a smooth, light-ochre sand slope rises from the lower right toward the center, with a few angular rocks, one split and fallen, and very small human figures walking or sitting. Dominating the middle ground are four colossal seated statues: the nearest, on the left, is seen nearly frontally, with a striped nemes headdress, false beard, broad necklace, hands on its knees, and hieroglyphs on its arm, chest, and throne. Between its legs stand much smaller figures. The next statue is partly hidden by a mass of rock; the two on the right are seen in profile, calm-faced, looking into the distance. At the center, set into a niche, stands a falcon-headed figure with a sun disk. To the far left, on a rock, two tiny men give the scale: one stands, the other sits. The light is soft and even, the line fine and detailed, and the sky is an almost empty pale gray. Below the image appear the printed title and signatures at lower right.","contexto":"This color lithograph from 1846, published in London in the series Egypt and Nubia, was made by Louis Haghe after a drawing by the Scottish artist David Roberts, and edited by F. G. Moon. It shows the Great Temple of Abu Simbel, in Nubia, with its colossal seated statues carved into the rock. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, images like this, brought back by travelers to Egypt during the 1800s, fueled Egyptomania in Europe and the United States, visible in architecture, interiors, and funerary monuments. The museum also raises a current question: who has the right to interpret ancient Egyptian motifs and styles?","como_mirarla":"Start with the tiny people, on the left cliff and on the path to the right, and then raise your eyes to the seated statues to feel the change in scale. Notice that the figure closest to us looks almost straight at us, while the others turn in profile toward the sand. Look last at the small doorway and the small figures at the giants’ feet: they remind us that this cliff is also an entrance.","dato_curioso":"In the 1960s the temples of Abu Simbel were cut into blocks and moved to higher ground in an international UNESCO campaign to save them from flooding caused by the Aswan High Dam.","preguntas":["How does our perception of the statues change when we discover the human figures scattered across the scene?","What does this nineteenth-century European view reveal about the temple, and what might it leave out about the people who lived near it?","Who can reinterpret an ancient culture’s motifs today, and with what responsibilities?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Egypt and Nubia, Volume I: The Great Temple of Aboo-Simble, Nubia","se_ve":"Una estampa horizontal sobre papel blanco roto muestra, en tonos beige, arena y grises pálidos, la fachada rocosa de un templo excavado en un acantilado que ocupa casi toda la imagen. I pause on the torn white paper and on those beige, sand and pale gray tones that Louis Haghe printed in 1846 after David Roberts’ drawing.
