In the centre, framed by a round arch, is a miniature of the Nativity set in a landscape. On the left, the young Virgin Mary kneels on green ground in three-quarter profile, wearing an intense blue mantle with dark and golden folds and a shining gold halo; her hands are joined in prayer and her gaze is lowered. In the middle, naked on the ground, lies the tiny, pale Christ Child, with a halo and fine golden rays, slightly raising his arms and legs. On the right, Joseph, an older bearded man, sits on a low wooden bench in a blue tunic, pink mantle and black shoes, holding a staff and looking calmly at the Child. Behind them rises a rustic woven-wicker fence; to the left are a sloping roof and a red canopy dotted with gold. In the background are green hills, a distant town with towers, and two faint grey figures beside an animal, possibly a donkey. Below the scene are three lines of brown Gothic script with a large, richly decorated blue-and-gold initial. The whole margin teems with dense floral tendrils: blue, red, green and gold leaves, little flowers, red strawberries and black dots on the pale vellum, framing the text like a garden.","contexto":"This is a leaf from a Book of Hours, dated about 1430 and made in northeastern France in the fifteenth century. The author is unknown. It was painted in ink, tempera and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held in The Jeanne Miles Blackburn Collection, the image shows the Nativity, an event directly described only in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The source suggests it probably follows the mystical visions of Saint Bridget of Sweden, who visited Bethlehem in 1370 and whose accounts circulated widely after her canonization in 1391. The exact original book and patron are not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the deep-blue Virgin at left, then follow her gaze to the tiny Child glowing on the bare ground, not in a manger. Next, look outward: from the costly red canopy to the rustic wicker fence and the distant landscape. Finally, let your eyes wander through the flowery margin, where the sacred scene seems to bloom into a garden.","dato_curioso":"The Christ Child has no crib: he lies directly on the ground, radiating light, in keeping with Saint Bridget's vision that the child was suddenly born surrounded by a brightness that eclipsed Joseph's candle.","preguntas":["Why might the artist have placed the Child on the bare ground instead of in a manger?","What does the contrast between the luxurious canopy and textiles and the rustic fence and landscape suggest?","How does the crowded floral border change your reading of a scene that is deliberately simple at its centre?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Hoja de un Libro de Horas: La Natividad (recto) — Ficha bilingüe / Leaf from a Book of Hours: The Nativity (recto) — Bilingual record","se_ve":"Hoja rectangular de vitela, vertical, de bordes ligeramente amarillentos y moteados por el tiempo. I pause to look at what time has left on the vellum: yellowish, mottled edges, but colors that remain vivid. Look at Mary’s deep blue mantle, with dark folds and golden touches, and the bright gold halos that had to be carefully burnished.
