At center, filling nearly the full height, stands a manor house of light-colored stone, seen from the front and slightly from below. Three very steep dark slate roofs dominate the upper half, topped by slender metal finials and weathervanes; to the left and right rise turrets with pointed conical roofs, the right-hand one rounder and more massive. The three-story facade mixes smooth walls with strongly marked corners: at the top, a small window in a triangular gable with a faintly sketched coat of arms; in the middle, a tall mullioned window with open shutters; below, a double door left ajar, reached by a curving double stair that encloses a small oval terrace. Narrow slit windows pierce the turrets. Ivy and dense shrubs climb the base and partly hide the side walls. In the foreground, a calm pond or moat reflects pale light; it is crossed by irregular stepping stones, with tall grasses, tiny flowers, and a leaning willow on the right bank. The sky is almost empty, with a soft warm gradient. Fine lines and hatched shading give a rough texture to stone and foliage.","contexto":"This is plate 70, dated 1860, from Architecture Pittoresque ou Monuments des XVeme. It was drawn and lithographed by Victor Petit (1817-1874), published and edited by Charles Boivin, and printed by Lith de Godard in Paris, as the inscriptions on the sheet indicate. The subject is the Manoir de Villechétive, in Nièvre, France, described at the top as late 16th century. The print belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, through the Bequest of John Bonebrake. The building's present condition is not stated in the source.","como_mirarla":"Look first at the steep, almost exaggerated roofs that organize the whole image, then move down to the open door at ground level. Notice how the vegetation and water soften a building that, without them, would seem severe. The small, half-hidden side windows change the scale: they remind us the manor was also meant to be defended and lived in.","dato_curioso":"The tint-stone technique used an additional stone with a flat warm tone beneath the main drawing, which is how the sepia atmosphere unifying sky, stone, and water was achieved without hand-coloring each impression.","preguntas":["What does this idealized 19th-century view reveal, and what might it hide, about life in a late 16th-century manor?","How do the water, ivy, and wild grasses change our perception of an architecture built from stone and geometry?","Why might a 19th-century audience have wanted to collect images of old French chateaux and manors?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Manoir de Villechétive (Nièvre), lámina 70 de Architecture Pittoresque","se_ve":"Litografía vertical en tonos sepia y beige sobre papel claro, con un amplio margen blanco donde se leen los títulos impresos. I focus on how Victor Petit built this 1860 lithograph, plate 70 from Architecture Pittoresque.
