Its proportions dominate the image: it is many times wider than it is tall, with irregular ends and slightly worn edges. The surface has a dry, fibrous texture, in a light, aged tan, with small variations in tone, faint stains, and areas darkened by time. Across it run three dense blocks of handwritten text in black ink, separated by two empty spaces. Each block contains several tight horizontal lines, made of small, compact, repeated signs, with very regular spacing. At first glance they form three dark rectangles of great visual rhythm; only on looking calmly can slight differences in stroke and intensity be noticed. In the middle of the blank spaces are two white, roughly diamond-shaped holes with dark edges, visually echoing each other. Near the upper and side margins are a few isolated marks, possibly folio numbers, much smaller than the main text. The lighting is even and soft, without strong shadows, so the leaf appears to float. There are no figures, landscapes, or decoration: the whole presence of the piece lies in the material, the handwriting, and the age of the support.","contexto":"This piece is folio 25, verso, from a manuscript of the *Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra*, known as *The Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines*, a central work of Mahayana Buddhism. According to the source, it is dated Sunday, September 14, 1119, year 239 of the Newar Samvat calendar, in the month of Ashvina, and it is made with gum tempera and ink on palm leaf by an unknown author. The source links its origin to eastern India, Bihar, and the Vikramashila monastery, and its painting to Nepal, Kathmandu. It is now preserved by the Cleveland Museum of Art.","como_mirarla":"First, look at the leaf as an object, not only as a page: notice its length, its holes, and its worn edges. Then move closer to the density of the lines and try to follow their rhythm without needing to read them. The holes change the reading of the piece: they remind us that the text was bound, carried, and handled.","dato_curioso":"The two holes are not damage: in palm-leaf manuscripts they were used to pass a cord through that bound the folios together and kept them in order.","preguntas":["What does a sacred text change when we look at it without being able to read it?","How does the length of the palm leaf influence the way the body imagines reading it?","What traces of use, care, and time can be recognized in this folio?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 25 (verso), de un manuscrito de La perfección de la sabiduría en ocho mil líneas (Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra), 1119","se_ve":"Se ve una sola hoja, muy larga y estrecha, colocada en horizontal sobre un fondo liso casi blanco. I focus on the support before the script. From afar there are three dark patches arranged on a light, elongated band, like constellations on a horizontal strip.
