It is a support of aged palm leaf, in beige, tan, and pale brown tones, with slightly irregular, worn edges, small breaks, and darker stains that reveal its age and handling. On its surface, black ink handwriting fills most of the space in three compact rectangular blocks, separated by two untexted vertical bands. Within each band, near the center, there is a small, light, rounded diamond-shaped hole, formerly used to pass the cord that bound the manuscript. The script is made of fine, dense, remarkably regular lines; the characters are tiny and repeat with an almost woven rhythm, so from a distance the text looks like a dark, vibrating texture rather than individual words. At the left edge, visible close up, there are small vertical marks and numbers. At the upper margin of the central block and at the right edge, isolated handwritten signs can also be seen. The lighting is even, without strong shadows, and emphasizes the fibrous, matte, slightly rough surface of the leaf against the museum's smooth neutral background.","contexto":"This is folio 177, verso, from a manuscript of the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, also known as the Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra, a fundamental Mahayana Buddhist text devoted to wisdom. According to the source, it was made on Sunday, September 14, 1119, in year 239 of the Newar Samvat, in the month of Ashvina. The manuscript is associated with Vikramashila Monastery in Bihar, eastern India, and the painting with Kathmandu, Nepal. It is executed in gum tempera and ink on palm leaf. The author is unknown. Palm-leaf manuscripts were common in South and Southeast Asia; their long, narrow format derives from the shape of the leaf itself.","como_mirarla":"First take in the whole leaf as an object, not only as text: notice its length, its holes, and its worn edges. Then move across the three columns and observe how regular the writing remains despite the narrow space. The blank margins and the gaps around the holes change the reading of the page: they show that this wisdom was also meant to be tied, carried, and handled.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual fact: on this long leaf there is no image of a person or deity; the text itself, divided into three orderly blocks, is the entire visual protagonist.","preguntas":["What does it mean to preserve wisdom in such a fragile material as a palm leaf?","How does your experience of the text change if you look at it as an image, without reading it?","What might the hands that copied, bound, and carried this folio for centuries have felt?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 177 (reverso), de un manuscrito de la Perfección de la sabiduría en ocho mil líneas (Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra)","se_ve":"Una sola hoja, muy larga y estrecha, se extiende en horizontal sobre un fondo liso y claro, ocupando casi toda la imagen. I pause at how fragile this palm leaf looks, in beige and ochre tones, with irregular edges, small tears and dark spots that reveal its age.
