The leaf fills almost the entire frame and shows a wrinkled, warped and fragile surface, with pronounced horizontal creases and irregular, frayed edges. The base color is a pale yellowish beige, mottled with brown, ochre and purplish stains from damp and mold, denser toward the lower center and margins. The Greek text, written in reddish and brown ink, is barely legible beneath grime and wear; only faint lines of script can be guessed on the right half, faded and broken. Patches, tears and losses are visible, with translucent areas and folds that create soft shadows. Diffuse light reveals the rough texture of the vellum, its pores, small holes and thinned translucent zones where the skin has worn away, conveying a strong sense of great age and extreme fragility. Small pale repairs and darker speckled foxing add to the layered, archaeological quality of the surface.","contexto":"According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is the text page of folio 2 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, dated about 1000–1100 and probably produced in a monastery in Constantinople, Byzantium. The complete volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding. While this folio appears heavily stained and without visible decoration, each of the four gospels in the book opens on a page with brilliantly illuminated borders depicting its author, along with birds — chiefly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains representing the fountain of life and salvation. Its sophistication points to a Constantinopolitan monastic origin.","como_mirarla":"Look first at the parchment texture rather than the text: wrinkles, stains and patches tell its material history. Then search the right half for traces of reddish script, almost erased, and notice how damage turns the page into a landscape.","dato_curioso":"Although this folio looks nearly illegible from damp and age, the full manuscript preserves 428 leaves and its illuminated openings use real gold on vellum, a hallmark of imperial Byzantine workshops in Constantinople.","preguntas":["How does our appreciation of a sacred book shift when we see time’s damage instead of its golden illumination?","What does the deterioration of this page reveal about materials and preservation a thousand years ago?","Can a damaged page communicate as much as an intact one about the lives of those who used it?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 2 verso, de un Libro de los Evangelios con Comentarios (c. 1000–1100)","se_ve":"En primer plano se observa una página de pergamino muy deteriorada, vista desde arriba sobre un fondo gris neutro, encuadernada por el lado izquierdo con un lomo de cuero oscuro y desgastado. The neutral gray background is like space and the folio is an ancient, cratered terrain. The beige, brown and purplish tones are like damp stains that look like nebulae.
