The left-hand page—folio 94 verso—is fully visible, while only a narrow strip of the following page appears at right. At left, the spine area and fore-edge reveal dozens of stacked leaves, slightly uneven and wavy, in yellowed ivory tones. The vellum page is aged cream, darker and more golden toward the edges, with soft creases, gentle undulations, and irregular brown spots, especially near the corners and around the heading. Across the top runs a faded line of title lettering, surrounded by a blurred halo. Below it, about fifteen lines of Greek in large, rounded, reddish-brown ink occupy the upper third. A much denser block follows: some twenty-five tight lines of smaller script reaching almost to the lower margin. One final line in larger letters stands out at the bottom. The handwriting varies in intensity, and some letters look smudged. There are no drawings on this page: its visual force comes from the contrast between the luminous parchment, the warm ink, and the shadows created by the volume’s thickness.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 94 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, by an unknown maker. It was produced with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding, and contains 428 leaves with texts in Greek. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders depicting its author, along with birds—mainly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul—and fountains, representing the fountain of life and the salvation of the soul. Its sophistication suggests a specialized monastic workshop. Who wrote it, and for whom, is not known.","como_mirarla":"First look at the contrast between the large upper script and the dense block of smaller writing below it. Then move to the margins and stains: they show the age and handling of the vellum. Finally, notice the thickness of the volume on the left; that detail changes the page from an isolated text into part of an enormous book.","dato_curioso":"Although this page has no images, the complete book contains 428 leaves, and each of its four Gospels opens with an illuminated page decorated with peacocks and fountains.","preguntas":["What difference in use or importance might explain the contrast between the large script and the much smaller, denser writing?","How does knowing that this book has 428 leaves change the way you read this single page?","What traces of the people who made, read, or preserved this volume can you find in its surface?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 94 (verso), de un Libro de los Evangelios con comentarios","se_ve":"En vista cenital y ocupando casi todo el encuadre, un libro grueso y abierto reposa sobre una superficie lisa gris verdosa. I pause on the skin of this page, that aged cream vellum turning golden near the edges.
