The right-hand page occupies almost the entire frame, while only a narrow strip of the left-hand page is visible next to the spine. Along the right edge, the bulky fore-edge reveals many stacked leaves, slightly wavy and darkened at their borders. The main surface is vellum in a yellowish cream tone, with damp stains, fine creases, translucent patches and two small holes or burn-like marks near the lower central text block. The Greek text is handwritten in brown and reddish ink in closely packed lines. Near the top is a heading; around the middle, one passage stands out in larger, darker and more widely spaced letters, opening with a large T-shaped initial that projects into the margin. Around it are marginal signs, smaller initials and notes in a lighter, more compact hand. In the upper right corner, “116” can be read, probably a later addition in pencil or faint ink. The light is soft and even, without harsh shadows, revealing the matte, slightly rough texture of the parchment and the irregularity of each line. There are no human figures or illustrations on this side; its visual force comes from the contrast between the empty margins, the worn material and the rhythmic density of the handwriting.","contexto":"This is folio 116, recto, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in Constantinople, around 1000–1100. Its author is unknown. The volume contains 428 leaves with Greek text and was made with ink, tempera and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, each Gospel in the book opens with a brightly illuminated border showing its author, peacocks—symbols of the immortality of the soul—and fountains evoking the fountain of life and salvation. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a Constantinopolitan monastery, although this is not known with certainty.","como_mirarla":"Begin with the large T at mid-page, where the script grows bolder and more widely spaced. Then move across the surrounding smaller notes to sense the difference between the main text and its commentary. Finally, look at the margins, stains and worn edges, which record the age and handling of the material.","dato_curioso":"Although this page has no figures, the complete volume contains 428 leaves; the museum description notes that each Gospel opens with an illuminated border featuring peacocks and fountains.","preguntas":["How does the change in the size and spacing of the letters alter the way we read or sense the hierarchy of the text?","What can the stains, holes and open margins tell us about the uses and survival of a book that is nearly a thousand years old?","What is gained and what is lost when a manuscript page is experienced only through a digital photograph?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 116 (recto), de un Libro de los Evangelios con comentarios, autor desconocido, c. 1000–1100, Cleveland Museum of Art","se_ve":"Se ve un libro grueso y abierto, fotografiado desde arriba sobre un fondo gris oscuro y liso. I pause on the creamy yellowish surface of the vellum, with its fine wrinkles, damp stains, and edges darkened over time.
