Seven fragments of dried palm lie on cream-colored card, yellowed with age and flecked with tiny dark specks. At top left, a long slender stem ends in a drooping cluster of small, round, wrinkled fruit, dark brown and black. Below it follow several fan-shaped leaves: yellowish-green, brittle-looking, split into stiff narrow segments radiating from a single point like an open hand fan. Some are seen from the front, others from the back, paler and almost silvery. At the center and lower right, small insects — flies or wasps with fine wings — rest on the leaves, likely trapped or attracted during preparation. Bottom right, a printed label with typed and handwritten text identifies the species and collectors; a barcode and institutional stamps were added later. The light is even, archival, and reveals every fiber, vein, and fold of the dried tissue.","contexto":"Herbarium sheet with seven specimens of *Coccothrinax argentata*, a fan palm native to Florida, the Bahamas, and parts of the Caribbean. It was collected and prepared by Mary Morris Vaux and Margaret Neilson Armstrong, whose names appear on the label — something still uncommon for women naturalists of the period. The sheet preserves original field annotations with morphological observations, typical of the systematic botany of the early 20th century. The source provides no exact date; it was likely produced in the late 19th or early 20th century. It is now preserved at The New York Botanical Garden.","como_mirarla":"First, look for the insects: they are not painted in, they are part of what remains of the plants. Then find the names and ask who those names made visible — and who they left out.","dato_curioso":"*Coccothrinax argentata* is known as the silver palm, because the underside of its leaves has silvery hairs that reflect sunlight and reduce water loss — an adaptation to coastal sun and wind.","preguntas":["What can a dried plant still tell us that a photograph cannot?","Why does this sheet preserve some insects forever alongside the plant?","What changes when the collectors named are two women of that era?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Palma plateada, siete veces prensada","se_ve":"Un pliego de herbario ocupa casi todo el encuadre sobre un fondo claro y liso.
