The fully visible left page is a sheet of aged vellum, cream and ivory in tone, with uneven, yellowed edges, soft wrinkles, and a slightly undulating surface that catches the light. Along the left side, the thickness of many stacked leaves is visible; on the right, only a narrow strip of the facing page appears, with stitching and worn binding at the top corner. The text, in Greek, occupies mainly the upper and middle-right portions of the page, leaving broad empty margins, especially across the lower half. It is written in small, dense, flowing script in brown and reddish-brown ink, arranged in closely spaced lines. Near the top there is a faded line of larger lettering, possibly a heading, blurred and ghostlike. In the lower-middle section the script becomes noticeably larger, bolder, and darker for several lines, and a few enlarged initial letters project slightly into the left margin. Small reddish marks and initials punctuate the text. There are faint purple-brown stains in the upper-left corner, small spots, creases, and darkened areas near some line endings, all signs of age and use.","contexto":"This is folio 165, verso, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made by an unknown author in Byzantium, likely in Constantinople, around 1000–1100. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with text in Greek, written in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — mainly peacocks, symbols of the soul's immortality — and fountains of life. That decoration is not visible on this particular folio. Its sophistication suggests, though it is not certain, that it was probably produced in a Constantinopolitan monastery.","como_mirarla":"Start with the empty lower half of the page and then move upward toward the denser writing. Notice the shift to larger, darker lettering in the lower-middle section, which breaks the rhythm of the page. Finally, look at the stains and folds along the edges: they make the age and handling of the volume visible.","dato_curioso":"The complete volume contains 428 vellum leaves, so this quiet, mostly undecorated page is only one moment within an exceptionally large and labor-intensive manuscript.","preguntas":["How does the large amount of blank vellum change the way we read a sacred text?","What might the change in the size and darkness of the script signal to a medieval reader?","What traces of the people who made, read, or preserved this book can we find on this page?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 165 (vuelto), de un Libro de los Evangelios con comentarios","se_ve":"La fotografía muestra un volumen encuadernado y abierto, visto ligeramente desde arriba, sobre un fondo gris oscuro. I pause on this vellum that is almost a thousand years old. The cream vellum is the vault and the brown ink text forms tight constellations up top, dense and flowing.
