Almost all the frame is taken by the right-hand page, a sheet of vellum in warm cream tones, slightly darkened and undulating at the edges; on the left only a narrow strip of the facing page is visible, with the sewing and folds of the spine. At the top right, in faded ink, is the number '174'. The text, in Greek, occupies the upper two-thirds in a compact rectangular block, leaving especially wide margins below and to the right. The handwriting is small, slanted and fluid, in brown ink, with many ligatures and abbreviations; some lines and words appear in a more reddish ink. At the top, two lines in larger, more spaced letters form a heading, and a large capital M in a grey-brown tone opens the main text. Fine ruled lines are barely visible beneath the writing. The vellum shows translucent stains across the top, small brown and purple spots, pinpricks along the right margin and tiny holes by the spine. At the lower left, beneath the text block, are two characters, perhaps a quire mark. The light is even and soft, with no harsh shadows, revealing the matte, slightly grainy texture of the skin and the thinness of the stacked leaves at the fore-edge.","contexto":"This is folio 174 (recto) of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, by an unknown author. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with text in Greek, in ink, tempera and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks — symbols of the soul's immortality — and fountains, for the fountain of life and salvation. This particular page, by contrast, is a sober text page; its exact scribe is not known.","como_mirarla":"First take in the calm of the wide margins, then move into the dense block of writing. Notice the larger heading and the enlarged M at the upper left: they mark hierarchy within the page. Finally, look for stains, tiny holes and numbers added later — the page was not only written, it was used for centuries.","dato_curioso":"Although the book's Gospel openings were brilliantly illuminated, most of its 428 leaves are, like this one, pages of dense commentary — luxury here coexists with everyday study.","preguntas":["What does it mean to read a sacred text almost always surrounded by commentary?","Why reserve gold and colour for each Gospel's opening, and leave pages like this one nearly bare?","What traces of readers, beyond the scribe, can you spot on this sheet?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 174 (recto), de un Libro de los Evangelios con comentarios, c. 1000–1100, autor desconocido, Bizancio, Constantinopla","se_ve":"La fotografía muestra un libro abierto, visto desde arriba, sobre un fondo gris oscuro. The block of Greek text fills the upper two thirds, very compact and rectangular, like a neatly aligned constellation, and leaves huge margins below and to the right, like empty space to breathe.
