Only the right-hand page, folio 187, is fully visible; of the left page only a narrow strip along the spine remains. The vellum is a warm cream color, slightly uneven, with deckled, darkened edges and a texture that is matte, fibrous, and aged. The right side reveals the thickness of the volume: dozens of stacked leaves in tones of beige and light brown. The page is covered by a dense block of handwritten Greek text in brown ink, in small, regular, closely packed lines that leave a wide blank margin at the bottom. Near the lower part, two lines in larger, more spaced letters interrupt the rhythm. Above and below the block there are blurred greenish and reddish traces, perhaps the remains of titles or decoration. Several stains with brown and orange halos, spots in the upper right corner, and a handwritten number, 187, mark the surface. On the right edge, translucent strips of modern repair tape, a tear, and folded areas show the fragility of the material and its later conservation.","contexto":"This is folio 187, recto, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries by an unknown author, made in Byzantium, probably in Constantinople, around 1000-1100. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek and was executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel in the book opened with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds—mainly peacocks—and fountains. Its level of sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. The specific scribe and illuminator are not known.","como_mirarla":"First, look at the block of text as a single surface, almost like a woven fabric. Then move closer to its irregular edges and to the stains that interrupt it. Finally, stop at the larger letters near the bottom: there the page changes rhythm and reminds us that this was a book made to be read aloud, paused over, and commented on.","dato_curioso":"In this book, according to the source, peacocks were not mere decoration: they symbolized the immortality of the soul, while fountains represented the fountain of life and the salvation of the soul.","preguntas":["What does it mean to preserve a book whose value lies both in its text and in the wear of its pages?","How does our reading change when the writing is beautiful but we cannot understand the language?","What traces of the people who read, repaired, and stored this volume for centuries remain on this page?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 187 (anverso), de un Libro de los Evangelios con comentarios, c. 1000-1100, autor desconocido, Bizancio, Constantinopla.
