The right-hand page fills most of the frame; only a narrow strip of the facing page and binding is visible at the left. The support is vellum, a warm cream color, slightly translucent and uneven, with wavy, darkened edges and a matte surface that suggests animal skin more than paper. In the center, a dense block of Greek minuscule handwriting in reddish-brown, sepia ink occupies the upper two-thirds of the page. The lines are close, regular, and gently undulating; the letters are small, linked, and full of abbreviations, with slightly darker strokes at some word beginnings. Generous margins surround the text, especially below, where the emptiness makes the page feel calm. In the upper right corner, the number \"197\" is handwritten in gray pencil. A vertical translucent strip, likely a modern conservation support, runs down the right edge and catches a vertical highlight. There are small sewing holes along the inner margin, faint stains and a browner patch at the lower right, and a subtle pitted texture near the bottom. At the right, the thickness of the bound volume is visible as a stack of many thin, yellowed leaves.","contexto":"This is folio 197 (recto) of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium around 1000-1100, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, as its sophistication suggests. The author is unknown. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, written and painted in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks — symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. This particular folio is a plain text page.","como_mirarla":"First, let the density of the handwriting impress you, then look out to the wide, quiet margins. Notice the hand-written folio number and the modern conservation strip: two ways of caring for the text, a thousand years apart. The key detail is what is not here: no gold or image, just the steady labor of reading and copying.","dato_curioso":"The full volume has 428 leaves, and although this page is unadorned, the openings of its four Gospels were decorated with peacocks, a Byzantine symbol of the immortality of the soul.","preguntas":["Who copied page after page like this, and what did sustained attention mean as a form of devotion?","How does a plain text page change when you know other pages in the same book shine with gold and images?","What do the stains, holes, and modern repairs tell us about the thousand years of life of this object?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 197 (recto), de un Libro de los Evangelios con comentarios","se_ve":"Se ve un libro abierto, fotografiado desde arriba, sobre un fondo gris oscuro casi plano. The block of Greek text at the center looks like a dense constellation, with tight and regular lines forming a dark band against the light vellum background. The wide empty margins are the space around the stars, the emptiness that makes what matters visible. The number 197 in pencil at the top right is like a coordinate to locate ourselves in this universe of 428 leaves.
