The volume is thick: along the right edge one can see the sides of dozens of vellum leaves with irregular, yellowed, slightly wavy edges. The main page is an aged ivory color, with brown stains, small holes, areas darkened by handling, and a faint translucency that suggests the passage of time. In the upper right corner, in pencil or faint ink, appears the number “204”. The handwritten Greek text occupies most of the surface in three blocks. The script is minuscule, slanted, and tightly packed, drawn in sepia and reddish-brown ink; some initial letters are larger and more decorative, especially at the start of paragraphs. One middle block uses smaller, denser lettering, like commentary set beside or around the main passage. There are few blank spaces, almost like breaths between sections. At the left edge the previous page, also written on, is partly visible in shadow. The light is soft and even, without strong glare, revealing the fibrous, porous, slightly wrinkled texture of the parchment. There are no human figures or illustrations on this leaf: all its visual force lies in the rhythm of the lines, the contrast between ink and vellum, and the material marks of an object nearly a thousand years old.","contexto":"This is folio 204, recto, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries made in Byzantium, probably in Constantinople, around 1000–1100. Its author is unknown. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek and its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople, although this is not certain. Each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — principally peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and the salvation of the soul. This particular leaf shows no illumination, only text and commentary.","como_mirarla":"First follow the three blocks of writing and notice how their size and density change across the page. Then look for the larger initial letters and the small gaps that mark new sections. Finally, move away from the text and observe the stains, holes, and wavy edges: they change the page from a surface for reading into a material record of age and use.","dato_curioso":"Although this page has no images, other opening pages in the same volume use peacocks as a symbol of the immortality of the soul and fountains as an image of the fountain of life, according to the museum source.","preguntas":["How does the reading of a sacred text change when main passage and commentary share the same page?","What can stains, holes, and worn edges tell us that the written words cannot?","Why might a book alternate between plain text pages like this one and opening pages richly decorated with gold and color?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 204 (frente), de un libro de los Evangelios con comentarios","se_ve":"Se ve un libro abierto, fotografiado desde arriba sobre un fondo gris oscuro, aunque solo la página derecha —el folio 204, frente— es plenamente legible.
