Wade Fund.","se_ve":"An open book is seen from above, slightly angled, against a flat dark gray background. The right-hand page fills almost the entire frame; on the left, the thickness of the volume appears as dozens of thin, uneven leaves stacked together. The vellum is a warm, aged cream, darker and slightly translucent at the edges, with gentle waves, soft creases, small brown stains, and a frayed lower right corner. A semi-transparent vertical strip runs down the left side of the page, probably a modern conservation support. The text, handwritten in Greek minuscule in dark brown ink, forms a compact block in the upper two-thirds, with fairly regular lines and narrow margins of handwriting. At the top, a heading stands out in larger letters and reddish ink, underlined by a horizontal stroke. Midway down, a larger initial and a small marginal mark introduce a new section. There are also discreet signs in the margins: a number like a '4' on the left, a small symbol on the right, and tiny markers near the heading. The light is even and soft, without harsh shadows; it reveals the matte, slightly rough texture of the skin and the sheen of the bound edge at the bottom. No people or illustrations appear: the presence is that of the scribe's hand, repeated line after line.","contexto":"This is folio 277, verso, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made around 1000–1100, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, Byzantium, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The unknown author wrote in Greek on vellum, in a volume of 428 leaves bound in leather, using ink, tempera, and gold. The source explains that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks — symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. This particular page is a plain text page, not one of those decorated openings. The monastery attribution is probable, not certain, and is based on the book's sophistication.","como_mirarla":"First, look at the block of writing as an image: a dense, orderly rectangle floating on a wide margin of blank skin. Then move closer to the larger, darker initial and the heading at the top, where the hierarchy of the text becomes visible. Finally, look at the edges, the vertical strip, and the stains: that is where the page stops being only text and reveals a thousand years of handling.","dato_curioso":"Although this folio is sober, the same book opens each Gospel with peacocks: in Byzantine Christian symbolism, as the museum notes, they represent the immortality of the soul.","preguntas":["What is lost and what is gained when a sacred text is contemplated in a photograph, without being able to touch the vellum or turn the page?","Why would a book lavish gold and color on its openings and then leave pages like this almost entirely to handwriting?","What traces of readers, conservators, and time can you distinguish on this page, and how do they change its meaning?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 277 (vuelto), de un Evangeliario con comentarios — autor desconocido, Bizancio, Constantinopla, c. 1000–1100. I pause on what time has left on this warm cream vellum, with darker and slightly translucent edges, soft undulations and small brown age spots.
