The right-hand page, the focus of the image, is a sheet of aged vellum in cream and pale beige tones, with wavy, uneven edges, brownish stains along the margins, and a rougher, slightly darkened area at the bottom. At the upper right, '309' is handwritten in faint ink. Near the top, a horizontal ornamental band, now very faded and mottled in brown and ochre, precedes several lines of larger Greek script in reddish ink. Below, a dense block of smaller Greek minuscule fills most of the page in dark brown ink, with fairly regular lines that tilt and compress slightly toward the end. Some initial letters project into the margins—one on the left resembling a small decorated figure, another on the right shaped like a T—and a few words near the lower right are darker, as if retraced or worn. On the left, a sliver of the facing page and the central fold are visible, with stitching and small tears. Soft, even light reveals the vellum's matte, fibrous texture and the volume's thickness at the right edge.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 309 recto of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, likely in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, by an unknown author. The volume contains 428 leaves with Greek text, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds—chiefly peacocks, symbols of the soul's immortality—and fountains of life. Its sophistication suggests it was probably made in a Constantinopolitan monastery, although this is not known for certain. The specific scribe and decorator are unknown.","como_mirarla":"First, look for the contrast between the faded heading at the top and the dense block of text below. Then compare the large red letters with the small brown script to understand the reading hierarchy. Finally, scan the margins and stains: they reveal the page's age and handling as much as the words do.","dato_curioso":"Although the book is known for its brilliantly illuminated Gospel openings, this particular folio is almost entirely text: its decoration has faded to a few brownish traces above the heading, a reminder that gold and color on vellum also age.","preguntas":["What does the difference between the red heading and the small brown text tell us about how this book was read?","Why might a book combine pages as austere as this one with richly illuminated Gospel openings?","What can stains, numbering, and marginal initials tell us about the readers who used this volume over the centuries?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 309 (recto), de un Libro de los Evangelios con comentarios","se_ve":"Se ve un libro abierto desde arriba, ligeramente en ángulo, sobre un fondo plano gris oscuro. I focus on skin turned into page: that cream vitela with wavy edges, brownish stains and a rougher, darker lower border. The cream page is like a bright vault, stained by centuries as if by stardust. The faded upper band suggests an erased constellation, and the regular lines of Greek minuscule recall orbits drawn with monastic patience.
