The support is warm ivory vellum with irregular edges, gentle cockling especially at the lower border, and clear signs of age: scattered brownish and faint purplish stains, soft creases and a slightly turned corner. The ink, in reddish-brown and faded black, forms two blocks of Byzantine Greek minuscule, dense and continuous. At the top, three lines in a somewhat larger hand with slightly emphasized initials serve as a heading. Below, the main text fills most of the page, about twenty-five lines of fine, regular script, with a few enlarged dark initials marking paragraph breaks. The book gutter and a glimpse of the facing leaf appear on the left. In the upper right margin a later pencil foliation reads 361, with faint inventory marks above it. Lighting is soft and even, with no metallic highlights on this commentary page; there are no gold or painted borders here, only the matte texture of parchment and script. Small translucent round spots, likely old drips or wear marks, dot the lower right area.","contexto":"This leaf is from a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated to about 1000–1100, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the full volume has 428 leaves with Greek texts in ink, tempera and gold on vellum in a leather binding, and its sophistication points to a major workshop in the imperial capital. Each Gospel in the book opens with a richly illuminated border showing the evangelist, peacocks as symbols of immortality, and fountains of life. Folio 361 is a text-and-commentary page without illumination, typical of the exegetical sections. The scribe and exact workshop are not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the vellum texture and how the brown ink sits on it, then follow the contrast between the heading and the main block of script. Notice the stains, the modern foliation and the enlarged initial that structures reading and hints at long use.","dato_curioso":"While this folio shows only script, other pages in the same 428-leaf volume are executed in tempera and gold on vellum, a costly technique linked to leading studios in Constantinople around 1000 when commented Gospel books reached a high point of refinement.","preguntas":["How does seeing a plain text page change your sense of the book compared with its illuminated openings?","What can stains, edges and later notes tell us about the manuscript’s age, use and preservation?","What role did running commentary alongside the Gospel play for a Byzantine monastic reader?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 361 (recto), de un Libro de los Evangelios con Comentarios","se_ve":"Página abierta de un códice medieval fotografiada en ángulo leve sobre fondo gris. As a restorer I focus on this warm ivory vellum with its irregular edges and gentle waviness, signs of a thousand years of life.
