It fills the center of the image and is shown in three-quarter view, turned toward its left. It is a nude woman carved from her head to just below the hips; the legs are cut off, so the figure seems to rise out of an irregular, rough base, like rocks or the edge of a fountain. Her torso twists gently: her head bows and turns in profile, eyes looking down, while her chest faces more toward us. One hand rests with fingers spread over her right breast; the other drops down and opens over the rounded form between her thighs. Polished skin catches a soft light that models shoulders, breasts, belly and arms, in contrast with the highly worked hair, made of small curls, braids crossing her forehead, and a topknot finished with a small raised shape. She wears plain bracelets on both wrists and on her left arm. Her expression is calm, lips closed, nose straight. Small shadows in the eyes, armpit, navel and between the fingers add depth, and the marble shows faint veining and slightly darker areas near the base.","contexto":"According to the source, *Fata Morgana* was made around 1572 by Giambologna (1529–1608), the Flemish artist active in Italy, after being commissioned by the prominent banker Bernardo Vecchietti. The figure once crowned a fountain and took its name both from the nearby spring that fed it and from the legendary fairy linked to King Arthur, here connected with restoring youth; the source also notes a pun on Vecchietti, whose surname suggests “old.” It is one of only around a dozen marble sculptures by Giambologna, an artist better known for bronze, and its twisting body was meant to reward viewing from every side. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.","como_mirarla":"First follow the twist from her lowered head to her torso and down to her hands, one high and one low. Then look for the contrast between the polished skin and the curled hair and rough base. That lower hand and the fragmentary ending change the reading: she is not simply posing, she seems to be emerging from the water.","dato_curioso":"Although Giambologna is best known for his bronzes, the source notes that this is one of only around a dozen sculptures he made in marble.","preguntas":["How does your reading change if you imagine her not in a museum but on top of a fountain, with water below?","What does the contrast between polished skin and rough, unfinished stone at the bottom suggest?","Which effect dominates for you, sensuality, modesty, or the feeling that she is caught unaware?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Fata Morgana","se_ve":"La escultura, de mármol blanco ligeramente cálido, aparece sola sobre un fondo gris en degradado, más oscuro arriba y casi blanco bajo la base, sin pedestal visible. I focus on the contrast described in the record: the polished skin that reflects soft light on shoulders, breasts and belly against the rough, irregular base from which the figure seems to emerge.
