In the left foreground, occupying much of the image, a nude woman is seen entirely from behind, bent forward over the sloping side of a large tub. Her dark hair is gathered up, her face invisible, her back, buttocks, and legs catching the lightest tones. One hand presses awkwardly against the tub for balance; one leg is still raised or inside it while the other stretches down, its foot reaching toward a dark, heavily hatched rug. At center-right, a second woman — the maid — stands almost completely hidden by a large pale towel she holds up with both hands. Only part of her face, an eye, and small hands at the corners of the cloth peek out. Behind them is a folding screen or paneled wall, pale on the left and shaded with dense vertical strokes. In the lower right are rounded cushions and dark furniture; along the right edge, a table or dresser holds patterned vessels or a pitcher, rendered in loose black marks. The light is diffuse, without a clear source, and the texture comes from crossed lines, smudged gray areas, and abrupt contrasts between bare paper and deep shadow. Small details — the toes, the fingers gripping the cloth, the cushion on the floor — emerge only on slow looking.","contexto":"Leaving the Bath (1879–80) is a print by French artist Edgar Degas (1834–1917), made with drypoint and aquatint and now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to the museum, it shows a woman seen from behind as she grips a tub and steps cautiously out, while a maid, mostly hidden, holds up a cloth to dry and warm her. Degas began exploring printmaking in the 1850s and registered at the print department of Paris's Bibliothèque Nationale to study masters such as Rembrandt van Rijn closely. He regarded prints as an important part of the Impressionist group exhibitions and showed them alongside paintings. The specific models and place are not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the bather's bent back and follow the line of her legs to the foot searching for the floor. Then notice the maid, almost erased behind the towel: the cloth meant to cover one woman also hides the other. Finally, look at the edges of the room to feel how close — and how unwelcome — our viewpoint is.","dato_curioso":"The maid is not entirely hidden: above the raised towel you can make out part of her face and a hand, so the figure who is meant to serve and disappear briefly becomes visible.","preguntas":["What does it change to see the bather only from behind, without her face or gaze?","How do class and work appear in the relationship between the nude woman and the maid hidden by the towel?","Is the viewer simply observing an intimate scene, or does the composition make us complicit in a form of intrusion?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Edgar Degas, Saliendo del baño (1879–80)","se_ve":"Estampa casi cuadrada en negro, grises y un blanco cálido, hecha con trazos rasposos y de apunte sobre papel crema con un margen visible.
