The handwriting in the upper left reads 'Oct. 67' and 'Tuning'; a faint signature appears in the lower right. Three figures occupy the center in a row. On the left, a young man sits on a chair, leaning forward with his head bowed and his hat tipped over his curly hair. He cradles a violin against his body, one hand at the neck and the other holding the bow diagonally while he tunes. Beside him, a bearded man wearing a soft hat, open jacket, and loose trousers sits with one leg crossed over the other and a shoe pointing into the air; he holds a transverse flute loosely and smiles toward the right. Facing him stands a small girl in profile, in a long dress, a cape-like collar, and a cap or bonnet, holding something small and indistinct in her lowered hand. The room behind them is barely suggested: vertical lines for walls or paneling, a few strokes hinting at a fireplace or stove and furniture on the right, and scattered yellowish specks on the paper. The pencil lines are loose, repeated, and unfinished, so faces, hands, and clothing dissolve into soft gray hatching, giving the scene an intimate, suspended feeling, as if music were about to begin.","contexto":"Tuning (1867) is a graphite drawing by William Sidney Mount (American, 1807-1868), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art in the Hinman B. Hurlbut Collection. According to the museum, Mount was the first major American painter of genre — scenes of everyday life. The source notes that this drawing is not directly related to Mount's famous painting The Power of Music, although its musical subject brings that work to mind, as does another drawing, Catching a Tune. Dated October 1867 in the upper left corner, this is a work from the final period of Mount's life; what specific occasion it records, if any, is not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the bowed head of the violinist on the left, then follow the diagonal of his bow toward the smiling man in the center. Notice that the music has not really begun yet: one instrument is being tuned, another is simply being held. Finally, look at the girl: her still, listening posture turns a quick sketch into a small scene of anticipation.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual detail: although the drawing is called Tuning, only the violinist seems to be tuning. The man in the center holds his transverse flute idly across his crossed leg and looks toward the girl, as if the pause before the music were as interesting as the music itself.","preguntas":["What changes in the scene when we realize the performance has not started yet — that this is tuning, waiting, preparation?","Why do you think Mount placed a listening child opposite two adult musicians, and how does her stillness balance their gestures?","Does the sketch's unfinished quality make the moment feel more private and immediate, or more distant and hard to read? ¿Por qué?"]}},"etiquetas":{"en":["genre scene","everyday life","graphite drawing","sketch","music","violin","flute","childhood","listening","19th century","united states","intimacy","expectation"],"es":["escena de género","vida cotidiana","dibujo en grafito","apunte","música","violín","flauta","infancia","escucha","siglo xix","estados unidos","intimidad","expectación"]},"objetos":["violín","arco","flauta travesera","sombreros","sillas","vestido largo","gorra de niña","chimenea o estufa insinuada"],"colores":["#EAE3D3","#D8CFBB","#9A9589","#6F6A61","#C4BBA6"],"animo":[],"epoca":"1867, siglo XIX / 1867, 19th century","certeza":"alta","advertencias":[],"capa":{"voces":[{"guia":"la restauradora","en":"I pause on the mottled cream paper and its irregular edges, especially at the bottom. As a conservator I am drawn to that fragility: the light, sketchy drawing, close to a study, that preserves the immediacy of the gesture from October 1867.","es":"Me detengo en el papel crema moteado y sus bordes irregulares, sobre todo abajo. The young man with the violin, leaning forward in concentration, is like a star tuning its frequency; the man with the flute, legs crossed and smiling patiently, orbits around him. The barely suggested background with vertical lines and a hinted fireplace leaves everything suspended, like the brief silence before music, like light, begins to travel.","es":"Veo esta escena como una constelación de tres cuerpos en espera.
