It occupies almost the entire frame, and its edges are irregular, frayed and notched, like a piece cut or torn from a larger garment. On the right, a wide strip of plain, light ochre fabric survives; on the left, another narrower and more damaged strip remains. Between them runs the main ornament: two wide brick-red bands flank a narrow central strip of very dark blue-green, covered from top to bottom with stylized, symmetrical plant motifs in ochre, red, green and cream. They resemble small trees or branches with heart-shaped leaves, flowers and buds repeated in mirror image. Beside each red band is a thin red border with a succession of small pale hooks or spirals, edged by dark lines. At the upper and lower ends, a cut-off oval motif appears, like an arch. The surface shows the grainy texture of the weave, perceptible threads, faded areas, small holes and pale patches where the fabric has been lost, especially in the center and on the left. The light is even, without strong shadows, emphasizing the contrast between the warm red, the deep blue and the muted ochre of the background and margins.","contexto":"According to information from the Cleveland Museum of Art, holder of the work and donor record of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of J. H. Wade, this is a fragment with a sleeve band from a tunic, from Egypt during the Byzantine period, dated by the source to 400s - 600s. Its author is unknown. The technique is described as tabby with inwoven tapestry ornament. Late antique tunics in Egypt often carried contrasting woven bands, probably both decorative and identifying, although the owner, the place of manufacture, and the exact use of this example are not known.","como_mirarla":"First, follow the dark central strip from top to bottom, as if you were reading a column. Then compare the repeated plants: they seem identical, but each one changes slightly. Finally, notice the plain ochre areas at the sides; they reveal that this ornament was part of a much larger garment.","dato_curioso":"Surprising visual observation: although the plant motifs repeat, none is exactly identical to another; the small asymmetries reveal the handwork in the weaving.","preguntas":["What might the whole tunic have looked like, and how would this band have looked when it was worn on a sleeve?","What can the worn areas, holes and losses tell us about the age and journey of this fragment?","Why might plant motifs have been repeated for centuries on garments from different cultures?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Fragment, with a Sleeve Band, from a Tunic (Cleveland Museum of Art, autor desconocido, 400s - 600s, Egypt, Byzantine period, tabby with inwoven tapestry ornament, Textiles, Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of J. Ocupa casi todo el encuadre y sus bordes son irregulares, deshilachados y con entrantes, como un recorte arrancado de una prenda mayor. I pause on what time has made visible. The narrow greenish blue central stripe is like a slender milky way flanked by two reddish fields, and the thin borders with pale little hooks look like constellations repeating in rhythm. The mirrored plant motifs, with ocre and cream shoots and flowers, feel like symmetrical systems expanding from an axis. Although it is a sleeve band from the 400s to 600s, its order makes me think about how we always seek to align the sky and ornament.","es":"Este textil me recuerda a un mapa celeste vertical.
