Its most striking feature is an enormous, flat, oval-looking disk — round in reality, foreshortened by perspective — barely thick, with sharp edges, resting on a short, truncated-cone foot, much narrower than the top, wider at the bottom. The whole piece is dark, almost black stone mottled with white, ash-gray, and pale speckles, especially visible along the rim and on the base, where the pattern looks like scattered confetti. The upper surface is smoother and more uniformly dark, matte, worn, with small pits, faint scratches, and stains. Several thin dark cracks cross it almost from side to side, forming irregular fragments, as if it had broken and been put back together; on the left edge there is also a tiny notch. The light comes from the upper left, soft and diffuse, modeling the foot and casting a gentle shadow to the left across the gray floor. There are no figures, inscriptions, handles, or ornaments. Imposing only through proportion and weight, the object conveys solidity and, at the same time, an unexpected thinness at its edge.","contexto":"Known as an Offering Table, this piece is attributed to ancient Egypt, probably Saqqara, north of the Step Pyramid, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is dated in the source to 2770–2573 BCE and associated with the Early Dynastic period, Dynasties 2–3, although the ranges given do not overlap exactly. It was excavated by J. E. Quibell in 1910–1911. It is carved from anorthosite gneiss, a very hard stone. Such stone vessels and tables were probably used to present food or liquids in funerary or ritual contexts. The name of its maker and its original owner are unknown.","como_mirarla":"First, look at its silhouette: a very wide, thin disk floating on a much narrower foot, like a pedestal cake stand. Then move closer to the top and follow the cracks running across it; they reveal its fragility despite the hardness of the stone. Finally, compare the smoother, darker upper surface with the speckled edge and base.","dato_curioso":"Its surprising feature is not decoration, of which it has none, but its damage: the great circular top is still crossed by fine cracks that allow us to read it as an object broken and reassembled, surviving almost five thousand years.","preguntas":["What offerings could have been placed on such a wide, flat surface, and how would they have looked against the dark stone?","What does the choice of a material as hard and heavy as this say about the importance of the ritual it served?","How does knowing that it was broken and reassembled change the way you value it today?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Mesa de ofrendas","se_ve":"En el centro de un fondo liso gris claro se apoya una mesa o soporte de ofrendas, bajo y ancho, fotografiado ligeramente desde arriba y de lado. We know it is very hard to carve, which makes its simple and precise shape even more remarkable. Its speckled stone, black with white and ashy gray confetti, looks like a starry night sky solidified. It fascinates me that, with no ornaments or inscriptions, its only eloquence is proportion: an immense, thin disc held by a short truncated cone foot. The soft light casting a delicate shadow makes me think of how ancient peoples measured time with shadows.","es":"Cuando la miro desde arriba, ese plato circular me recuerda a un eclipse o a una luna oscura suspendida sobre el fondo gris claro, como un horizonte en miniatura.
